i'm on a train in the country
tracking over the hill
looking for my lover
as twilight takes off the sky
away from the life I've known
we ride, these golems and i
this course set in steel
of bends and breaks known only
by that sleepy One in the sky
falling over the hill
i look on the valley of love
the promised land forever
dreaming under the dusk
and as stars stream earthward again
i see what I've waited to see
standing alone by the track
cradled in the valley
she peers from her fragile dream
her robes fluttering blue
her step unsteady, unsure
but bringing her where we will meet
she reaches warmly
calls me to keep her a while
we'll ride off into the night
to find a place together alone
to dwell in starshine eternal
we'll wave goodbye to golems
flesh and blood of hard hills
watching them leave us in peace
at home where we've wanted to be
and so she reaches to me
as the train approaches the edge
i stretch for the final effort
to reach our lasting beauty
the track shakes
the wheels spark and brake
my World falters in fear
swaying away from the edge
i move as soon as i can
but it's too late to catch her
i reach forth to find
the end of a chain
i'm stuck to the train
as she falls through the bushes behind me
the train rumbles on
the valley falls away
night deepens and darkens
and on my track i stay
riding over this hill
into the darkness devoid
alone with pale cold statues
no longer pretending
deader than the dream
i watch my World
bleeding in those bushes
falling in darkness forever
beyond
the bottom falls out
the last star twinkles and dies
the train rolls off the last lonely hill
flashing along its iron
far off into emptiness
so close to Heaven
that this is Hell
where i pull my damned chain
to make myself tired
and lie down to sleep
alone.
