Garden gnomes are made of terracotta. Their red pointed caps and green aprons remind us of the short men who worked in the mines of Thuringia.

From early April each year garden gnomes emerge from hibernation to decorate gardens throughout Europe.

Graefenroda on the northern slope of the Thuringian Wood is the birth place of the garden gnome. Philipp Griebel manufactured the first gnomes out of clay here in 1880.
