1. Why is the word "doctrine" preferred in our churches rather than theology? Many people reject the word "theology" because it is like dead orthodoxy, also because in some churches, it seems to have taken the place of Christ and the Bible. Doctrine, in verb form, means to teach, and in noun form, refers to that which is being taught. Doctrine is usually limited to the Bible, whereas theology takes information from all sources.
2. If you were going to determine the doctrine of "tithing," what would be the four steps in arriving at a Biblical statement? I would use the four steps of theologizing. First, I would collect all the available data. Second, I would arrange the data scientifically to have a complete explanation on the topic. I would ensure that my data corresponded to reality and that it was consistent with itself. I would also prioritize the information so that I could identify that which is most relevant and most essential to my analysis. Third, I would exhibit my data in a presentable and understandable form. Lastly, I would defend it to prove my conclusions true.
3. Name the seven kinds of theology and indicate which one is emphasized in this course. First, Biblical theology involves a study of the Bible and the dynamics which were involved in forming the Bible, including language, textual criticism, literary criticism, and the principles of exegesis. Second, Historical theology is a study of the expression of theology in each age. Third, Dogmatic theology is a study of the different beliefs held by other groups throughout the age. Fourth, Philosophical theology is applying the rules of theologizing, along with logic and reasoning, to applications of the natural world. Fifth, Contemporary theology is a study of the theological trends in the current world. Sixth, Systematic theology is applying the rules of theologizing to all available data concerning God and His works. Seventh, Practical theology involves making a practical application of theology, including regeneration, sanctification, edification, education, and service.
4. Why do some people arrive at a false doctrine? First, human beings do not know everything, and they can make mistakes. In addition, they may be hindered by the limitations of language, by an ignorance of Scriptures, by God's silence on a particular matter, or by spiritual blindness.
5. What has been your greatest hindrance to a complete and correct understanding of theology? How can you overcome this weakness in this course? In the past, I have looked at theology and doctrine as a single entity. I have never used clear steps for theologizing, such as those presented in Chapter One. In the past, I have not categorized theology into different types or into different branches. By not doing these things, my investigations have often lacked structure and discipline. Through the teachings of this course, I will learn how to thelogize, I will be aware of the different types of theology and how those types impact one's analyses, and I will learn to focus my study based on the various branches of theology.
