Lesson 9. Introduction To APA Style {548 words}
1. What is the general APA format for the proposal? American Psychological Agency (APA) has authorized a particular format for papers to be published. The paper must have 1-1/2 inch margins all around. The paper must be double-spaced, indentation of 5 spaces (probably the TAB key with most common word processors) at the beginning of each paragraph, indentation of quotations that are more than 40 characters (no quotes are used), with a short title in the upper righthand corner and the page number flushed right and double spaced under it, and no hyphenated right margins. Words should always wrap to the next line. Proposals must always be printed with letter quality or near letter quality printers.
2. How should the title page of the proposal look? The title page is page 1. The short title and page number should appear in the upper righthand corner. The running head should be in all capitals and centered across the bottom. The running title is the title to be printed at the top of each page if published, not the short title. The title of the paper, the author, the university, the course, the teacher's name, and the due date can all appear on the title page.
3. How are articles and books cited in the paper? A direct quote is of the form "........" (Doe, 1992, p. 331). A citation is shown as (Doe, 1992). Quotes can also be shown in the following manner: Doe (1992) suggests that "........" (p. 331). The period at the end of the sentence comes after the citation so that the citation is part of the sentence.
4. What is the format of the referenced section? The label "REFERENCES" will go at the top of the reference page. The short title and page number will also be on this page. Authors are listed alphabetically and by year if more than one entry by the author.
