COUN 585 - Introduction To Research Methods
Lesson 10. A Review of the Proposal {594 words}
1. What are the steps of a descriptive proposal? The descriptive research has Methodology (Subjects, Instruments, Procedures), Analysis of Data (Data Organization, Statistical Procedures), Significance of the Study (Implications, Applications), Budget and Time Schedule (Budget, Time Schedule), and References sections.
In the Subjects section, the researcher is only required to describe the sample population. Instruments are about the same in both proposal types and should contain a lot of questionaires and observations for the descriptive proposal. The procedures for collecting information will be the same. The data organization will have charts in both types of proposal. With the descriptive proposal, the statistical procedures will just restate the descriptive statement because there is not an hypothesis. The significance of the study will only make implications and applications back to the sample group since no inferences are being about towards another population. The Budget and Time Schedule section will be the same in both proposal types.
2. What are the steps of an inferential proposal? The inferential research has Methodology (Subjects, Instruments, Procedures), Analysis of Data (Data Organization, Statistical Procedures), Significance of the Study (Implications, Applications), Budget and Time Schedule (Budget, Time Schedule), and References sections.
After a review of the literature, the inferential proposal will state the hypothesis. In the Subjects section, the researcher will describe the sample population and the target population. Instruments are about the same in both proposal types and should have more null hypothesis and alternative hypothesis testing in the inferential proposal. The procedures for collecting information will be the same. The data organization will have charts in both types of proposal. With the inferential proposal, the statistical procedures will have general descriptive statistics and use inferential statistics in association with the null and alternative hypotheses. The significance of the study will make implications and applications back to the sample group and also inferences towards the target group. The Budget and Time Schedule section will be the same in both proposal types.
3. How are descriptive and inferential research alike? Instruments are about the same in both proposal types. The procedures for collecting information will be the same. The data organization will have charts in both types of proposal. The significance of the study will make implications and applications back to the sample group in both types. The Budget and Time Schedule section will be the same in both proposal types.
4. How are descriptive and inferential research different? After a review of the literature, the inferential proposal will state the hypothesis. In the descriptive proposal, the instruments will be more of the questionaire and observations variety, while the inferential proposal will make a lot of use of the null and alternative hypotheses. With the descriptive proposal, the statistical procedures will just restate the descriptive statement because there is not an hypothesis. With the inferential proposal, the statistical procedures will have general descriptive statistics and use inferential statistics in association with the null and alternative hypotheses. In the inferential proposal, the significance of the study will make inferences towards the target group as well as to the sample group.
