1. Why are seven days mentioned at the beginning of John? What Jesus did in the first seven days was indicative of his entire ministry. They include the message of the Baptist about Christ (day one), Jesus being baptized (day two), Jesus finding his first six disciples (days three and four), and His first miracle (day seven).
2. Why is John the Baptist given prominence in this Gospel? He was probably the most prominent Bible teacher of the time. People came to hear him preach, yet he did not perform any miracles. One hundred and fifty years later, people were still trying to follow him and make him a central figure of worship.
3. Prove that the unnamed disciple in verse 37 is John. Andrew and John had been disciples of John the Baptist. They had left to the Baptist to follow the Lamb of God. They called him Rabbi to signify “my great one” or “my honorable sir.”
4. What did John the Baptist mean when he called Jesus the Lamb of God? Jesus is referred to as the Lamb of God because of Isaiah 53 and the fact that Jesus would become the sin sacrifice for the world.
5. What lessons can be learned about personal evangelism from this passage? Andrew and John told their brothers (relatives) about their encounters with Christ. Andrew may have helped find Philip, and Philip found Nathaniel. Dr. Towns used the term FRANvelism for telling Friends, Relatives, Associates, and Neighbors.
6. What was the temperament of Philip and Nathanael? Philip was analytical and Nathaniel was sincere. In addition, Andrew was the first disciple, John was the youngest, Peter was most bold, and James was the most quiet.
7. What five disciples came from Bethsaida? What did the city's name mean? The five disciples from Bethsaida were Andrew, John, Peter, James, and Philip. Nathaniel came from Cana.
8. Why was Nazareth called "the city of garbage"? People from Nazareth put their garbage in the streets because so many unwanted people passed through their streets.
9. How is Jesus' omniscience or omnipresence seen in Chapter 1? In verse fifty, Jesus had seen Nathaniel sitting under a fig tree before Philip found him.
10. How is Jacob's ladder seen in chapter 1? In verse fifty-one, Jesus is the Ladder, hence only Way, between heaven and earth.
