Wuthering Heights Character List

 

The Earnshaws are parents of Catherine and Hindley. Mr. Earnshaw is the one who brings Heathcliff to Wuthering Heights.

 Hindley Earnshaw is Catherine’s brother. He despises Heathcliff from the very beginning for he takes all the love and attention away from Hindley.

 Frances Hindley is Hindley’s wife. She convinces Catherine to act more like a lady.

 Catherine Earnshaw is a free spirit in her world, a perfect match to Heathcliff. Her love for Heathcliff rules her life. She even believes that she married Edgar to help better Heathcliff.

 Hareton Earnshaw is the son of Hindley. He is raised under the influence of Heathcliff. He tries to better himself by learning to read and making himself more presentable.

 Heathcliff is a different man to every person he touches. To Catherine and Hareton he was wonderful. To others he was a true monster. Even in his own home is an outsider.

 Linton Heathcliff is Heathcliff’s son. He is a very sickly person. As he grows under Heathcliff’s roof he becomes more cruel but he loved Cathy.

 The Lintons are the parents of Edgar and Isabella.

 Edgar Linton is a child born to upper class. He loves Catherine and she marries him despite her love for Heathcliff. He is a good father to Cathy.

 Isabella Linton is Edgar’s sister. She marries Heathcliff despite what Edgar thought. Heathcliff is mean to her and Edgar does not see her again until her death.

 Cathy Linton is Catherine and Edgar’s daughter. She resembles her mother but does not possess the same spirit. She is very loyal to those that she loved.

 Ellen Dean is the narrator of the story. She is telling Lockwood the story through her memories of Catherine and Cathy.

 Joseph is a crazy old man who talks really funny. Despite this he is a model Christian and practices what he preaches.

 Zillah is the housekeeper at Wuthering Heights.

 Lockwood is the tenant at Thrushcross Grange who while sick asks Ellen to tell him the story of Wuthering Heights.

 

 

Wuthering Heights Chronology

 

- Mr. Lockwood, the new tenant of Thrushcross Grange, goes to visit his landlord, Heathcliff at Wuthering Heights.

- Above the door reads the date "1500" and the name "Hareton Earnshaw." Lockwood would like to know more about this but Heathcliff is not the person to ask.

- Heathcliff orders Joseph to bring wine and when he does not he goes to see about the matter. During this time Lockwood plays with the dogs which attack him and is saved by a servant.

- Over the wine Heathcliff becomes a surprisingly good host.

- Lockwood invites himself to come back the next day.

- Keeping his word he returns the next day despite the rain turn snow.

- Once again he receives an unpleasant welcome but this time from the misses.

- Heathcliff returns and replies a person might get lost in the snowstorm. Then he refuses to send a guide with Lockwood.

- Lockwood discovers the misses is Heathcliff’s daughter-in-law. He also learns that her husband is dead and the young man is Hareton Earnshaw.

- Mrs. Heathcliff is not allowed off the property.

- Lockwood says he will have to stay at the Heights but they have no accommodation for guests.

- Lockwood takes a lantern from Joseph who in turns sets the dogs on him.

- Lockwood develops a nosebleed and is too sick and dizzy to return home. Zillah shows him to his bed.

- Zillah shows him to a room that Heathcliff would not approve anyone sleeping in. It bears the names Catherine Earnshaw, Catherine Heathcliff and Catherine Linton.

- Lockwood passes the time by reading the books which acted as a diary for Catherine Earnshaw.

- Lockwood falls asleep and has two nightmares.

- The first dream is about him being bored in church and suggested crushing the preacher.

- The second dream is about a ghost named Catherine trying to get into the room.

- Lockwood cries out and Heathcliff comes to awaken him.

- Heathcliff cries for his dear Cathy to return.

- Lockwood is sick and to pass time he asks Mrs. Dean to tell him about his neighbors.

- She begins the story. Mr. Earnshaw is going to Liverpool and promises to bring the children presents. He instead returns with a young gypsy lad.

- The boy was christened Heathcliff. Cathy likes him almost immediately but Hindley plagues him. Heathcliff is used to this however and takes it without complaint.

- By the time Earnshaw’s wife dies, Heathcliff has entirely replaced Hindley in his father’s affections.

- Hindley and Heathcliff get into a fight.

- Earnshaw gets angry but instead of hitting Hindley he sends him away to boarding school.

- Ellen accuses Cathy of loving Heathcliff too much.

- Cathy’s "high spirits" even have her father questioning why she can’t be a good girl.

- Earnshaw dies with Cathy sitting beside his chair.

- Ellen overhears Cathy and Heathcliff comforting each other with images of heaven.

- Hindley comes, with his wife Frances, to his father’s funeral.

- Frances says she doesn’t like Heathcliff and Hindley makes him a laborer.

- One night Heathcliff returns alone. He and Cathy had gone to see Thrushcross Grange Cathy was bitten by a dog, and had to stay at the house.

- Hindley forbids Heathcliff to talk to Cathy and Frances convinces her to become a lady.

- Cathy returns clean and proper and although she plays with Heathcliff she still checks to see that her dress is clean.

- Heathcliff attempts to "be good" but fails. Hindley insults him and Heathcliff threw applesauce in his face.

- Cathy sneaks off to where Heathcliff is locked up.

- Frances dies while giving birth to Hareton. Hindley takes to drinking and treats Heathcliff awfully.

- In front of the Linton’s Cathy is very proper but she is still an unruly figure at Wuthering Heights.

- Edgar Linton visits while Hindley is away. Cathy is upset about an earlier fight and Linton sees the true side of Catherine.

- Heathcliff saves Hareton’s life when Hindley draws him from the banister .

- Cathy accepts Linton’s proposal of marriage despite her love for Heathcliff.

- Heathcliff overhears the conversation and runs away. Cathy runs after him through the rain and refuses to eat. Cathy catches a cold from the walk and Linton’s parents catch the fever and die.

- Linton and Cathy get married. Cathy moves to Thrushcross Grange with her husband and Isabella.

- Lockwood will be confined to his bed until spring.

- Heathcliff visits and is surprisingly friendly. Lockwood convinces Ellen to continue the story of the "hero" and the "heroine."

- Edgar spends his time catering to Cathy.

- Heathcliff returns. Cathy forces Linton to shake hand with him.

- Heathcliff has changed. He warns Cathy not to drive him away again.

- Isabella is infatuated with Heathcliff which angers Linton. Cathy tells Heathcliff of Isabella and he is horrified.

- Heathcliff has taught Hareton to be more like himself.

- Ellen tells Cathy she saw Heathcliff embrace Isabella. Cathy is jealous and confronts Heathcliff who accuses her of treating him infernally. Linton demands that Heathcliff leave but Cathy lashes out at her husband.

- Linton tells Cathy to choose between them and she refuses and throws a fit.

- Cathy shuts herself in her room for two days without food. Ellen is astonished by the change in her by the time she sees her on the third day. She will seek revenge on both of her men by killing herself.

- Cathy begins to relive her life through hallucinations. She sees her own face in the mirror and swear that the room is haunted.

- Edgar comes in and is horrified by his wife’s state. She hushes him when he asks about Heathcliff.

- Ellen goes to get help and discovers Isabella’s pet spaniel hanged with a handkerchief. Isabella and Heathcliff had eloped that same night.

- Cathy survives the fever but swears she’s going to die anyway.

- In letters to Ellen from Isabella we discover that she regrets leaving Thrushcross Grange. She is like a prisoner in her new home. She sleeps in a chair and is taunted by Joseph.

- Edgar refuses to communicate with Isabella.

- Ellen goes to Wuthering Heights and Heathcliff tells her to set up a time when he could meet with Cathy.

- Heathcliff treats Isabella cruelly and shows no pity when he sends her away.

- Heathcliff sneaks into Cathy’s room and knows by her look she is going to die. Cathy accuses him of driving her to death. He says she destroyed them both by marrying Linton. He refuses to forgive her.

- Linton returns home and Cathy says she will die if Heathcliff leaves. She faints and Heathcliff gives her to Linton.

- Cathy dies after giving birth to a little girl.

- Edgar shows little grief but Heathcliff calls on her ghost to haunt him. He then bashes his head on a tree.

- The day after the funeral Isabella bursts into Thrushcross Grange. She is very happy despite her appearance.

- Hindley attempted to kill Heathcliff but was unsuccessful and was wounded.

- Isabella insisted Heathcliff killed Cathy but if she had become his wife she would be just as unhappy as Isabella. Heathcliff throws a knife at her which cuts just beneath her ear.

- While he is raving Isabella escaped to Thrushcross Grange.

- She then flees to the south.

- Hindley dies and Joseph basically accuses Heathcliff of killing him.

- Ellen compares the baby, Cathy, to her mother.

- Linton has sheltered his daughter so that she does not know of Wuthering Heights or of Heathcliff.

- When Cathy is thirteen her father goes to see get Isabella’s son, Linton, for she has died.

- While he is away Cathy goes on a pony ride and Ellen finds her at Wuthering Heights. She is enjoying a conversation with Hareton. That is until she discovers that he is her cousin.

- Edgar brings Linton to Thrushcross Grange. He resembles Edgar but is very sickly.

- Joseph comes to take the boy to his father.

- Heathcliff’s "property" is delivered to him. He will treat him so well that one day he will run Thrushcross Grange.

- While wandering around the moors Cathy meets Heathcliff for the first time. It is her birthday and the anniversary of her mother’s death.

- Cathy is no longer allowed to write or receive letters from Linton.

- Edgar becomes ill and cannot accompany Cathy and Ellen on their walk. Cathy tries to get some rosehips by crawling over a locked door. Once there she is stuck.

- Heathcliff comes along and convinces Cathy that Linton is dying of love for her.

- Cathy visits Linton. The two get along fine until their parents are mentioned.

- Linton says that her mother hated her father and loved Heathcliff. Cathy pushes his chair over forcing him into a coughing fit.

- Cathy makes fun of Hareton for taking pride in learning to read his name.

- She has been visiting Wuthering Heights frequently.

- Edgar puts a stop to this but allows her to meet Linton on the moors, hoping he will be able to console her after his death.

- Edgar believes that Cathy is happy but does not realize that Linton is dying also even though he pretended to be fine.

- Edgar is very close to death.

- Cathy goes to visit Linton and Heathcliff shows up. They go to Wuthering Heights and locks the door behind them. When Cathy reaches for the key Heathcliff slaps her.

- She will be his prisoner and marry Linton in the morning.

- Ellen is held in a room for five days. Heathcliff took Cathy’s locket and smashed it under his foot.

- Edgar wants to change his will so that Cathy’s property will not go to Linton but the lawyer arrives to late.

- Cathy is reunited with her father just before he dies.

- Heathcliff takes Cathy back to Wuthering Heights.

- He tells Ellen that he looked at Cathy’s mother’s face when they buried Edgar. He also left the coffin with the top slid off so that when he dies they could somehow be reunited.

- When he opened her coffin he felt her presence and followed it to Wuthering Heights.

- Zillah refuses to wait on Cathy. No one would get a doctor for Linton. When Heathcliff finally came Linton was already dead.

- Linton left everything to Heathcliff.

- Hareton tries to make himself presentable but Cathy is not impressed.

- Lockwood will go away for six months.

- Lockwood goes to Wuthering Heights and delivers a note to Cathy from Ellen.

- Her books had been destroyed and Cathy scoffs at the idea of Hareton trying to teach himself how to read.

- Cathy is not allowed to eat dinner with them. As Lockwood leaves he feels bad that he could not make an attachment to Cathy as Ellen suggested.

- A year later Lockwood is in the area and stops at Thrushcross Grange. Ellen has gone to work at Wuthering Heights.

- Wuthering Heights has greatly changed. He sees Cathy trying to teach Hareton to read and rewarding him with kisses. What happened?

- Cathy tried to become friends with friends with Hareton. Eventually this became a reality when Cathy offers him a wrapped book and promises to teach him to read and not make fun of him.

- Cathy brings flowers from Thrushcross Grange to plant in Joseph’s bushes. She put primroses into his porridge and Heathcliff says her love for Hareton will turn him into a beggar.

- He doesn’t tear her to pieces because she resembles her mother and he is like Hareton.

- Now that everything is in place he cannot follow through with his revenge.

- Heathcliff would not eat and would go out at night and not return till morning.

- One day he disappeared and returned about midnight muttering the name Catherine.

- Heathcliff was happy. The following morning Ellen found Heathcliff dead. He was buried as he had wished.

- Villagers swear they Heathcliff walks abroad. Joseph has seen two spirits walking together. Even Ellen had a strange occurrence.

- Cathy and Hareton return and Lockwood leaves without making his presence known.

- He finds himself at the three headstones and wonders how anyone can imagine unquiet slumbers for the sleepers in the quit earth.
