MEMORIES OF A POLITICIAN

Those distant days of Neolithic man,
when people lived in matriarchal clan,
when man was still dependent on instinct
and it was yet innovative to think.
Those were dark days, darker than night those days.
Though we knew not, we suffered in a haze.
Thank God for those who made us see our pains
by, ‘gainst the stone cave floor, dashing our brains.
They made us see, and rightly so we found,
how we need them to keep us off the ground.
                                       Began thus that profane--sacred profession
and soon throughout the world spread the obsession.

                                       How unbelievably easy it was
to rule men and use them for one’s own cause.
Like sheep, man fell to domestication.
                                       King, statesman, Emperor, politician.
And tyranny, greed, avarice and wars.
Battlefield pimp, his subjects to death whores.

I’m thinking of my carpetbagger days,
                                       of my scandalous carpetbagger ways.
Tonight my heart is full of untold joy
                                       rememb’ring youth, a carpetbagger boy
buying by slight the votes of former slaves.
I’m thinking of my carpetbagger days.
