Obsence Gestures

By Wong Ann Peng

The obsene gestures of Dato Adnan Yaakob, the Yang Amat Berhormat Menteri Besar of Pahang, on the nomination day of Sanggang by-election is now the talk of the town. However provoked, the Yang Amat Berhormat SHOULD NOT have done what he did. It is not only shocking that he did the obscene gestures, but also equally shocking that the other UMNO big wigs, including the Yang Amat Berhormat Timbalan Perdana Menteri, lent support by their laughs. The logic - because they are the top state leader and second national leader for the people of Malaysia.I can still clearly remember that I was booed and jeered, and being shouted with obscene words by the UMNO supporters at the nomination centre for Serdang seat on 20 NOv 1999.

I was provoked by UMNO hooliganism. Did I react by wriggling my royal behind and clap my palm over fist towards the hooligans. Of course not, but instead bowed and waved towards the provocative crowd. Had I done so I would have brought my dignity to the level of the gutters. However, my two teenagers will soon ask me of the obscene gestures of the Yang Amat Berhormat Dato Adnan Yaakob. As a parent how am I to explain? Likewise the dilemma of the thousands of parents of teenagers the country over. More than a year ago I had a damn tough time trying to explain the notorious hanky panky conduct of President Bill Clinton with his White House intern, to my teenagers.

My colleagues in the PIBG (PTA) said the same.Such conduct of the Yang Amat Berhormat, which is immoral, cultural decadence, shocking, is bound to be aped by teenagers. If such conduct is by any other youth by the sideline of a football field, we parents don't want to know. Dato Adnan Yaacob is a public figure and Menteri Besar. Shame! Shame! Shame!

Pleaselah, Dato Adnan, do us parents a favour and make our task easier. Be graceful (if you understand the value of that word), admit mistake and apologise to the rakyat. By doing that you will help stop the slide of public opinion on the institution of government, which is already at its lowest.
