Course Descriptions

MBA 5101 Managing Corporate Resources
This course introduces students to management of corporate resources. It describes how managers organise and manage human and other resources. The classical, behavioural and quantitative approaches to management will be covered. In addition, management topics like, Theory and Practice of Management, Leadership, Group Dynamics, Organisation Structure and Goals etc, will also be addressed.

MBA 5102 Financial and Managerial Accounting
Provides an overview of Financial and Managerial Accounting. The accounting function and how it fits into the corporations' overall organisation and objective will be emphasised. Topics covered include, understanding Financial Statements, classification of costs, break-even analysis, cost-volume-profit relationships, basics of budgeting, variance analysis and accounting information systems.

MBA 5103 Marketing Management
Builds an in-depth understanding of basic marketing concepts and their application. Provides working knowledge of the tools of marketing - product, pricing and promotion policies. Distribution, channel building and consumer behaviour would also be covered. Additionally, issues in International Marketing and Marketing Research will be addressed.

MBA 5104 Business Economics
This course covers the area of managerial economics. Issues in applied economics like business cycles, inflation, exchanges rates and microeconomics will be emphasized. Economic paradigms of individual and firm behaviour and their interaction with the overall economic environment would be the focus.

MBA 5205 Quantitative Decision Making
Provides the framework of quantitative decision making. The course examines conditions under which quantitative techniques may be applied to making managerial decisions. Topics covered include, probability concepts, statistical estimation and hypothesis testing, regression and correlation analysis, ANOVA, non parametric statistics and optimization techniques.

MBA 5206 Managerial Finance
The course is designed to provide an in-depth understanding of the principles and theories of financial Management. Time value of money, capital budgeting basics, capital structure, managing short and long term assets etc. will be the emphasis. Islamic financing techniques like Mudharabah and Musharakah will also be introduced. This course is structured to both provide a foundation for further specialization in Finance or as a standalone for candidates intending to major in General Management.

MBA 5207 Operations Management
This course will focus on the design and control of manufacturing and service systems. The underlying premise being that goods and services should be produced at the right quantity and the appropriate time and cost. Topics include process analysis, capacity planning, forecasting, simulation, inventory analysis, quality control procedures, scheduling models, materials planning, critical paths, simplex and compound models and management of technology.

MBA 5208 Management Information Systems (MIS)
Provides an integrating framework combining the technical aspects of MIS to the problems of managing complex organisations. The course highlights issues and problem solving approaches that are important to managing MIS projects and organisations. In addition, the initial stages of the system development process including requirements collection, specification and needs analysis will also be covered.

MBA 6309 Human Resources Management II
Emphasises the management of a corporation's most important asset - its people. Provides an overall framework of personnel management with specific emphasis on the challenges of HRM, Human Resources planning, recruitment and selection, development, evaluation and performance appraisal. Issues like employee motivation and satisfaction and compensation administration will also be addressed.

MBA 6310 Organisational Behaviour
Introduces the area of Organisation Behaviour and selected topics in industrial relations. Designing and planning effective organisational structures, Labour - Management relations, change and organisational development will be the topics of focus. Industrial relations as practised in Malaysia, and organisational behaviour in the context of a rapidly developing economy, would be the additional topics covered.

MBA 6311 Management Policy and Corporate Strategy
Focuses on the formulation and effective implementation of corporate policies and strategy. The importance and challenges of designing an appropriate strategy in today's complex and constantly changing macro-environment will be highlighted. Topics covered include; problem diagnosis and rational choice, the strategy formulation process and effectiveness, feed-forward control and contingency theory.

MBA 6312 Financial Planning and Strategy
A case oriented course that examines in depth financial planning and financial strategy. It addresses several applied issues in finance. These include; estimating short and long term funding requirements, financing strategies, Mergers and Acquisitions, Investment decision making, project evaluation, valuation of the firm and growth strategies. In addition, topics of interest like, leveraged buyouts, MBOs, cost of capital and capital structure and issues in Islamic financing will also be covered.

MBA 6313 Portfolio Management
Analyses the area of portfolio management. Introduces organized securities markets and exchanges. Valuation of stocks and fixed income securities. Discusses problems and models of portfolio analysis and management. Examines in detail risk-return trade-offs, the Markowitz model, Modern Portfolio Theory and Capital Asset Pricing Model, Arbitrage Pricing Theory, Duration and Gap Analysis and techniques for evaluating the performance of fund managers.

MBA 6414 International Finance
This course examines financial management in an international context. Introduces foreign exchange markets, parity conditions, currency exposures and hedging techniques. It also examines issues in international investments, evaluating foreign projects, estimating costs of foreign funds and other related topics like Eurodollar, Eurobond and Asiadollar markets, currency swaps, etc.

MBA 6415 Money and Capital Markets
Focuses on instruments traded in money and capital markets. Aside from examining the functions and role of capital markets within the overall economy, the course will also introduce techniques of risk management. Here, the instruments of risk management, forwards, futures and options will be examined in detail. Instruments like stock-index futures, equity options and their variants will be discussed. The use of these instruments as part of an overall portfolio management strategy will be highlighted. Additional topics like immunization strategies, yield curve analysis and financial engineering concepts will also be covered.

MBA 6416 International Business
Examines how the social, economic and political environments in different countries can affect the international competitiveness of a firm. What implications these would have on appropriate business strategy, how to anticipate and minimise the impact of adverse changes in international conditions would be the focus of the course. Related topics like the formation of regional blocks and its potential impact on global trade dynamics would also be addressed.

MBA 6417 Business Transaction - An Islamic Perspective
This newly developed course will examine business transactions in an Islamic framework. Specifically, in the context of the Shariah and the underlying Islamic values. Designed in an application framework, the course will examine contemporary business issues and trends in the light of the principles, objectives and methodology of Islamic jurisprudence.

MBA 6418 Business Ethics
The course is intended to create an awareness of ethics and social responsibility in potential senior managers. The course conducts a sweeping overview of the ethical aspects of management, from personal values to the purposes of organisation to developing ethical corporate strategies. The course also provides a comparative evaluation of existing ethical principles and norms in confronting daily ethical dilemmas.
