Ten Steps to Designing Great Web Sites:

Develop your objective (Plan, Plan, Plan)

What is the purpose of your site?
Be consistent among pages.
Determine basic style or layout before you start.

Forget Cool / Think Practical

Does this add to the presentation?
Does this take longer to load?
How easy is it to read text on your site?
How easy is it easy to find the hypertext links on your web site?

Think locally / Act globally

Who will be those that you know locally who will be looking at your site and for what information will they be looking?
Who else might be interested and for what will they be looking?

Brand Your Site

Use a web site name that represents your Site.
Use a good page name for each page.

Grab Their Attention

You have only 5-10 seconds to grab their attention.
Keep the page short.
Provide information that will be of interest.
Those looking at your page are looking for something. What is it?

Promote Communication

Include contact information on every page.
E-mail received from sight should be answered within 24 hours.

Be Visually Interesting not Visually Irritating

Some White space is OK.
Tables can add interest. Don’t go overboard.
Use lettering that is easy to read.
Use backgrounds that do not distract from visual interest.
Have good contrast between background and lettering.

Provide Content, Content, Content

What information do your visitors want?
Remember the question...”what is the purpose of your site? ”

Eliminate Mazes (Create Easy Navigation)

Think like those viewing your pages.
Use terms that your visitors will understand and be looking for.
Don’t hide information such as contact information.
A navigation bar can be helpful.

Prune, Plant, Deadhead and Fertilize

Delete obsolete content. Add new content and improve current content.
Keep your site a manageable size.
Web sites should be update at least monthly.
Don’t use “last date updated” unless it is always current.
Obsolete material will question the quality of the site.
