The society has a growing
number of actors all eager to prove that all the world is indeed a
stage! Most of the shows have a scripted play of some kind - usually it
sets the scene for the coming battle. Roles could be anything from King
to lowly slave, although not all are speaking parts. The scripts have
only an outline of the scene and characters with no pre-written lines.
All dialogue is done on an 'ad lib' basis - each person knows who and
what their character is and tailors their lines accordingly.
The test for acting requires the applicant to take part in a short
scene of their own devising. They are then given another short scene to
enact chosen by the testers with a role opposite in nature to the
previous one. The testers look for several things in the applicants
performance including voice projection and the ability to move around so
that the entire audience has a chance to see what is happening. As the
audience is usually on several sides of the 'stage' this is quite
important. One of the things that aspiring actors have to beware of is
inappropriate language. This includes any modern terminology and any
profanities - use of swear words will result in immediate failure. There
are however a number of more appropriate phrases which can be used with
impunity.
The advanced test includes taking a major role in a scene during a
show or performing a soliloquy in front of an audience. |
