Crosses

Aim: Students will know and understand the events surrounding Jesus’ death on the cross, and will be challenged about their response to this.

OUTLINE:

Everyone constructs a paper plane and cuts their plane in half

Leader uses the pieces to outline the events surrounding Jesus’ death.

Challenge is given

YOU WILL NEED:

A blank piece of A4 paper for each person

Scissors

Blu-Tack

Felt Pen

THE MEETING

Give each person a rectangular piece of paper. Participants follow you as you demonstrate the following steps to make a "paper plane".

  1. 1. Take a sheet of A4 paper. Fold the top right corner down to point A, so that it forms a right angled triangle.
  2. 2. Fold the top left corner down to point B, so that it forms a second equilateral triangle shape.
  3. 3. The shape so far!
  4. 4. Turn the paper over and fold in half lengthways.
  5. 5. Fold each of the sides down to the centre fold. This should now resemble an aeroplane
  6. 6. Cut along the centre of the aeroplane shape. Be careful not to lose any of the pieces

When complete, ask the people to cut their "plane" in half (it works better if you start at the think).

All the eight pieces you have made will be used to build the scene below.

Place the pictures on the wall in the following order

1. Large Cross

Jesus, the Son of God, was nailed to a cross just outside the city of Jerusalem. Jesus had done no wrong. He didn’t deserve to be punished. His only crime was that he said He was God.

2. The Two Smaller Crosses

The Bible tells us that the men on either side of Jesus were criminals. They deserved to be punished. One of these criminals made fun of Jesus, mocked Him and didn’t believe that He was who He said He was. In a word he rejected Him. The other criminal would have heard all of this, but somehow he knew that Jesus was telling the truth. The Bible tells us that he turned to Jesus and asked Him if there was any room for him in His Kingdom. Jesus said to him "I promise you that today you will be in Paradise with me". In a word he believed that Jesus was God

3. The Sign

Label the sign "The King of the Jews" and explain that some people had heard Jesus talk about his Kingdom. They didn’t understand that Jesus was not talking about being King of their country, but He wanted to be King of their lives. They didn’t understand who Jesus was.

4. The Dice

Draw dots to identify the squares as dice. Here we have the Son of God dying on a cross and at the same time we find some soldiers using dice to gamble for His clothes. In a word they ignored who Jesus was.

5. The Spear

One of the Roman soldiers used the spear to make sure that Jesus was dead. They had driven nails into Jesus’ hands and into His feet, and now they pierced Him with a spear. But, inspite of all that man could do to Him, Jesus rose again from the dead just three days later – just as He said he would and proving that He was who He said He was.

In Summary

The Bible records that one of the soldiers looking up at the cross said, "Surely this Man was the Son of God!"

Who do you say that Jesus is?

Will you believe Him?

Will you reject Him?

Do you understand who He said He was?

Will you ignore him?

FINAL CHALLENGE

Arrange the eight pieces to spell the word LIFE.
