THE RELAY GAME PAGE

Just so I don't have to retype this every time; your group must be divided up into teams and lined up in single file. Only the front person in the line can run (or whatever) across to the other side. The next person in the line cannot advance until the runner tags their hand etc, etc, etc.

Just Eat It!

Fill a bag up with some different foods. Each runner should reach blindly into the bag and eat (or drink) the item they pull out before advancing. To make it fun use foods that the teens will probably not enjoy; a raw onion, a quart of buttermilk, a piece of limburger cheese, a can of Moxie, a piece of cold liver, a hot pepper, etc.

The Old 'Cross Dressing' Relay (not suitable for Mardi Gras weekend in Sydney)

For this one your teams must be divided by sex. On the guys side have a suitcase full of oversized women's clothing. On the girls side, a suitcase of oversized men's clothing. The runner must put the clothes on (over thier clothes), run across the floor with the suitcase, take off the clothes, put them in the suitcase, run back and give the suitcase to the next person.

The Cricket Bat Spin

Place cricket bats on the floor. Have the runners run to the bat, pick it up then place the top of the bat on the floor and the heel of the bat on thier forehead. Have them spin around 10 times while in this position. They must then run back to the next team mate. The fun part of this is that the kids get dizzy and the results of the runner returning can be comical.

Bible Verse Relay

Each contestant must run acros the room to a chair. On the chair is a Bible and a peice of paper with a Bible verse on it. The runner must sit in the chair, look up the verse, show it to a judge, place the Bible back on the chair, then return for the next person.

Egg and Spoon Relay

Have each runner hold a wooden spoon by the end of the handle (no, holding near the scoop). Then place an egg on the spoon. The runner must then advance and pass the spoon and egg off to the next person. If the egg is dropped the runner must go back to the starting point and begin again. You can do this two ways; the sloppy way, with raw eggs or the safe indoor way, with hardboiled eggs.

Blindfolded Obsticle Course

Layout a small obsticle course with orange cones (or some other items). Have each team choose a person to be the director. The first runner is blindfolded. The runner must then listen to the directions of the director as he or she guides them through the course.

Trike Race

Get a small tricycle. Have each runner ride the trike through an obsticle course. To make it even more fun, have each runner stop at a station and drink a baby bottle before returning back to the team.

Spool Relay

Get some of the large spools that are used to coil up electrical wire (the big ones the phone companies use). Tie a long piece of rope between them. The teams must run this race in pairs. Each pair will stand on the top of one of the spools (the flat side). They must then roll the other spool out in front of them with the rope. They can then step across to the second spool. They now roll the first spool out in front of the second one and step across again. This keeps going on until a line is crossed and the next pair goes.

String game

Divide players into two teams for competition; one large team works if playing just for fun. Tie a spoon to the end of a spool of string (yarn, curling ribbon, etc. all work fine). Have players stand in a row or circle. One by one, each player should feed the spoon (attached to string) through their clothes: down through the neck of shirt, through the pant leg, out the ankle. Whichever team finishes first wins; otherwise, it is just fun to see people's reactions to the string sensation.

Smore relay

Divide players into teams. Place a graham cracker, marshmallow, and piece of chocolate in a line (approx. 3-4 ft. apart) on the floor. Have each player take a turn being "wheel-barreled" through the ingredients so that each makes a smore with their mouth. I.E.: one player has hands on ground while another holds his/her legs, both run/crawl together. Of course, ingredients must be replenished between players.

Orange & Stocking Relay

Get 1 pair of stockings for each team and shove a decent sized orange down one leg to the end. Each team member must tie the stocking around their waist so that the orange is free to swing between their legs. An orange is placed on the floor and each member must move the orange across the length of the relay by swinging the orange in their stocking. Hands cannot be used to control the stocking's swinging motion. Controlled motion appears to rely on controlled pelvic thrusting and not laughing too much.

Up and Over Relay

This can be run over the evening between the main games, each team is timed. The team who does it in the least time wins. Teams stand in a line and all have soup spoons in their hands. On the floor in front of the first team member is a row of items ;- a jellybean, a marshmallow, a soggy tomatoe, an egg(hardboiled but if you feel like being nasty then with one of the teams you can substitute it for a raw one),a potatoe or anything you can put on a spoon (especially if your youth are like ours the messier the better). The first person picks up the first item which is usually easy and passes it over the head to the next person who then has to pass it between the legs to the team member behind him.The next person passes it over his/her head and this continues to the end of the team.If an item drops off any spoon then the team has to start again with that item. When an item gets to the back of the line, the back team member runs to the front to collect the next item. An added twist is to blindfold half of the team or all the team.
