Types of Reactions Lab with Balancing

To compliment sections 6.7 and 6.10 or Section 2.6 page 86

In each of the following labs both demo and done by you, the following chart is to be filled in for each lab.

Reactions to be Investigated

  1. Magnesium plus oxygen
  2. Heating copper (II) sulfate pentahydrate (bluestone)
  3. Iron plus copper (II) sulfate solution
  4. Manganese dioxide is added to hydrogen peroxide and the gas produced is tested
  5. Lead (II) nitrated is mixed with potassium iodide
  6. Copper wire is added to silver nitrate solution
  7. Zinc is added to hydrochloric acid and the gas produced is tested
  8. Sodium hydroxide is added to sulfuric acid. Take the temperature before and after.

In each of these labs you must fill in a chart as described above for each lab activity.

Activity 7 will be done as demo.
The others will be done by you. May take two days.

Instructions simplified

  1. The magnesium strip is held in a clamp and then heat to cause ignition.
(Warning! do not stare at the reaction)
  2. Bluestone (#2) is a blue powder. A scoop is added to a test tube, tilted sideways and the heated. The liquid residue is tested with blue cobalt chloride paper. Drive out all the moisture with the bunsen burner, dump out the residue onto a paper towel, put on the palm of your hand and a few drops of water. Note all changes.
  3. Activities 3 thru 8 ---> simply have the materials added to each other or mixed.

You will have 8 charts to fill in, try to do them in class as you do the lab. If you work as a team you should be able to do this.
