The Idaho Falls Idaho Temple

of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints

The temple by the river. With the Idaho Falls Temple the Church's temples began to have spires again. Some thought that it should have been designed with six spires like the Salt Lake Temple. However, unknown to the architects beforehand, Brigham Young had mentioned that temples would one day be built with one central tower. The spire is directly above the centrally located Celestial Room, adding to its symbolism as a place to approach God. This began a tradition of central spires continued in the Oakland, Ogden, Provo, Jordan River, Mexico City, Orlando, Bountiful, Mount Timpanogos and Madrid Temples. It is one of only two temples with murals in the Celestial Room (Los Angeles is the other).

The temple was announced in March 1937.
Ground was broken and construction begun on 19 December 1939.
The cornerstone was laid in October 1940.
The temple was dedicated on 23-25 September 1945.
There are 9 Sealing rooms in the temple.
The Endowment Ceremony is presented in the traditional 4 Ordinance Rooms.
There are 86,972 square feet in the temple.
The 148 foot tall spire is topped by a 12 foot statue of the angel Moroni, which was added in September 1983.
The Idaho Falls Temple serves stakes in most of eastern Idaho, parts of Montana and Wyoming.
