Now, these photos may give you the impression that the cable section is really just a ladder that one can just climb up, hand over hand. Actually, if you can see the individual clamboring up it, you'll notice that there are actually about 10 feet between the wooden planks. Believe it or not, these cables are set up in mid-May and taken down in early October every year. Kudos to the brave souls who do that job.
Here we are, mostly smiling, our gloves on, ready for the final frontier. At our feet behind us, there's a huge pile of gloves, from winter mittens to gardening gloves, probably dumped there by the park for any hikers who didn't bring their own. Since one pretty much has to haul oneself up the cables using the upper body, it's important that one have a good grip. Believe me, you really don't want to let go.
