James Fenimore Cooper

Born September 15, 1789 James Fenimore Cooper was the eleventh of twelve children to William and Elizabeth Fenimore Cooper. His father was a wealthy land speculator, who acquired a land patent to a large parcel just west of Otsego Lake. William Cooper founded the village of Cooperstown at the foot of Lake Otsego in 1786.

James grew up in his father's house at Otsego Hall, which is located right next to the Baseball Hall of Fame. It's location is now marked with a statue of Cooper's likeness.

After living in Scarsdale and in New York City, Cooper returned to live here the last years of his life, from 1834 to 1851.
