Did You Know....

Before the Spanish re-introduced them into the Americas in the late 1500's, Indians did not have horses to ride or carry heavy loads.  Horses were native to the Americas and lived here for millions of years, but they went extinct with the mega-fauna in this region of the world by about 10,000 years ago.

Indians lived their lives without the use of smelted metal, brass and iron for example.  Metal tools intended for use in  everyday life were not introduced until the arrival of the Spanish in the late 1500's.  Until about 4,200 years ago (2,200 B.C.) all of the things they needed were obtained or made with stone, bone, antler, wood, and shell tools.  By about 2,200 B.C., North American Indians began  to  make  clay pottery.  This improved their ability to  store larger amounts of food for longer periods of time.  This new technology was used to create societies with larger populations and more permanent residences.  Some of the oldest Indian pottery in North America was made right here in Georga.
