Scene Ten

In the blackout we hear The Captain of My Ship played as though music for a carnival, and when the LIGHTS RISE, that's exactly where we are: in a broken-down Midwestern carnival. On the backdrop we see a few different side-show attractions: SHAZAM THE SWORD SWALLOWER, RITA & JUANITA, THE SIAMESE TWINS, MIRIAM, THE BEARDED LADY. Last on the left is THE INCREDIBLE MADAME POLENSKA, PSYCHIC TO PRESIDENTS AND CROWNED HEADS. SHE WILL TELL YOUR PAST AND YOUR FUTURE. There is a bad drawing of Irene with a turban, sitting in front of a crystal ball. A BARKER stands on a raised platform. A SCATTERING of CUSTOMERS pass by, pay him little attention. The clothes tell us we are in the midst of the Roaring Twenties.)

BARKER
Hurry! Hurry! Hurry, Ladies and Gentlemen! See The Great Shazam, who not only swallows swords, he swallows sabers! Experience the shock of Nature's Mistakes: Rita and Juanita, babies born cemented together... (From the right, IRENE wanders on, looking fatter and boozier than when last we saw her. SHE holds a paper bag in her hand which contains a pint of bourbon from which she takes a quick swallow.)
IRENE
(to herself) I am captain of my ship,
I am master of my soul---
(SHE continues to hum as SHE ascends the platform. BARKER stops his spiel long enough to speak to her.)
BARKER
Hiya, Faina! Drink a good lunch?

IRENE

Go fuck yourself. (SHE raises her head with consummate pride and exits through an opening in the backdrop.)
BARKER
Hurry, Hurry, hurry! Getcha tickets now! Show starts in exactly twelve minutes. (COUPLE in their early 20s enter. GIRL stops and regards the attractions.)
GIRL
Oh, Elbert! I want my fortune read.

ELBERT

Come on!

GIRL

But it says she was psychic to presidents and crowned heads.

ELBERT

Yeah. Crowned heads of Filling Stations...

BARKER

Hurry, hurry, hurry, folks...
(A spotlight falls on the sign proclaiming THE INCREDIBLE MADAME POLENSKA. Everything around it begins to darken. The Captain of My Ship builds to a mournful crescendo.)
