September 30, 2000
Israeli occupation forces have used excessive and lethal force against Palestinian demonstrators in various districts of the occupied territories. The eruption of widespread demonstrations came in response to the massacre of Palestinian worshippers in the courtyard of the Dome of the Rock yesterday, 29 September 2000. 7 Palestinians were shot dead and 255 injured of whom 220 were hit in Jerusalem.
Today, 30 September, large numbers of Israeli soldiers and policeman were deployed in the early morning hours in the vicinities of Palestinian towns. Vehicles to and from Jerusalem were denied entry at the northern Israeli checkpoint near Aram. Today?s clashes resulted in the death of (9 Palestinians who were identified as follows:

According to LAW?s documentation, the number of injuries in the various
towns are as follows:

* 15 in Jenin including 3 serious injuries

LAW?s field researchers have also seen a number of Israeli undercover agents, disguised in Arab dress, storming the Asuwaneh neighbourhood and randomly shooting at a number of young Palestinians. The incident resulted in the injury of Yousef Asayad, 22, Tareq Al Hammouri, 23 and Nahla Musha?she?, 42. In another incident, a number of Israeli soldiers stormed the Jidda house and detained a number of people.
According to Palestinian medical sources and LAW?S field researchers, a many of the injuries were sustained in upper parts of the body, particularly the eyes and were caused by live ammunition.
In a press briefing the Israeli Police Chief, stated that Israeli forces and snipers were instructed to use live ammunition against demonstrators who could be considered a potential danger to the Israeli occupation forces. None of the demonstrators was armed.
LAW wishes to confirm the following:
1. LAW reiterates its position that the Israeli occupation
forces used excessive and fatal force against Palestinian demonstrators. The
use of excessive force was confirmed by the types of injuries documented,
and the number of demonstrators injured.
2. The Israeli Government alone is responsible for this
massacre and for the rising tension in the occupied territories.
3. LAW strongly denounces the actions taken by the Israeli
occupation forces against unarmed Palestinians.
In light of the above, LAW demands the following:
1. A total cessation of the lethal aggression carried out by
the occupying power against Palestinian residents.
2. Calls on the international community to pressure the Israeli
Government to bring it to compliance with UN Security Council resolutions
242 and 338 and to totally withdraw from the occupied territories including
East Jerusalem.
3. LAW calls on the international, regional and local Human
Rights Organizations to denounce Israeli violations and aggressive policies.
