HISTORY AS PROPHECY

There is a saying that history is prophecy. We can see a spiral pattern to many events, a seeming repeat of history as the spiral comes around to a certain point in time. This has become an established manner of interpretation of prophetic scriptures.

In Daniel 7 is a describe of the four beasts that represent the traditional enemies of Israel. Of the last horrible beast Daniel writes: "There was a fourth beast---fearsome, dreadful, and very powerful, with great iron teeth--that devoured and crushed, and stamped the remains with its feet. It was different from all the other beasts which had gone before it; and it had ten horns. While I was gazing upon these horns, a new little horn sprouted up among them; three of the older horns were uprooted to make room for it. There were eyes in this horn like those of a man, and a mouth that spoke arrogantly." --verses 7-8

This beast was a great empire that gave rise to other empires--the horns--after itself. This last horn had eyes like those of a man and a mouth that spoke arrogantly. This empire was humane, caring, just. How many nations have arisen since the four ancient kingdoms of Babylon, Persia, Greece, and Rome that seemed humane, just, and caring? Just in our century we've seen the Russian revolution, bringing the idea of a better life for the poor, common man--equality of all. Then the true brutal, repressive nature of Communism emerged. Jews in Germany considered that country so cultured and sophisticated that they were proud to call themselves citizens; many of them served in World War I in the Kaiser's army. The climate quickly changed, and the next World War brought the worst pogram the world had ever seen. The sun never set on the British empire; they were champions of fair-play and, along with the allies, defeated the Nazis. Yet, they turned the Jews away from the shores of their homeland--during the Holocaust and after--when the refugees desperately needed a haven. Arab oil was more important and valuable than the lives of the Jews. France, another of the allied nations of WW II, with a history of standing for liberty and personal freedom, was a strong ally of Israel. However, she, too, decided it wasn't in her best interests to continue, and began turning to the Arabs' side, against Israel.

Following the re-dedication of the Temple and the defeat of the Greeks, Judea was ruled by Hasmonean kings. There soon arose a dispute over the claim to the throne. Rome, the world power of that time, was asked to come solve the dispute--to bring peace to the region. Thus Rome came into Judea--at the invitation of the Jews. At first they were a responsible, "honest broker" in the process. However, this quickly eroded, the Romans soon had so much control that even the high priest and king were Roman appointees. Little by little, Rome's true colors showed-- through, and the grip tightened. Ultimately, there was war, the Temple was destroyed, and the 2000-year long exile began with horrendous tortures, killings, and expulsions.

Today we have another honest broker, who only wants to help us have peace in region. Many times we have heard that the major decisions "must be made by the parties." As we keep track of the news, reading articles such as the one below, we need to bear in mind the lessons of history. The USA is the new "horn" on the beast, with human eyes and a mouth that speaks soothing, conciliatory words to Israel. Yet, we must listen for the arrogant words, as the true nature of the beast again shows itself. An understanding of Prophetic scriptures and Jewish history add new understanding to articles such as the one here below. Yes, history is a prophetic spiral of time.

The American tilt to the PLO?
David Bedein, Bureau Chief

In the waning days of the Clinton administration, Israel has been witness to an American tilt against Israel, in favor of the positions held by the PLO, the Palestine Liberation Organization.

  1. The PLO has issued a new 40 page brochure dated April 2000 that calls for the total return of Arab refugees to the homes and villages that they left in 1948, based on UN resolution #194, thereby displacing Israeli cities, kibbutzim and moshavim within Israel proper. The American consulate in Jerusalem has provided full support to the PLO for this position. Indeed, the PLO refers to and regularly distributes the July 2, 1999 statement of President Clinton which endorses the Palestinian "right of return" in this regard.

  2. The new curriculum of the Palestinian Authority, funded in part by US AID, involves an intricate school program that inculcates a new generation of Palestinian Arab youth to make war on the Zionist entity, which is referred to in the official Palestinian school curriculum as a Nazi state. The US has turned a deaf ear to the idea that it should withhold funding of such schools until and unless the PA changes its school curriculum, which is well documented on the website of the Center for Montoring the Impact of Peace.

  3. On May 15, 2000, Arafat dispatched his spokesman to the Beit Agron International Press Center in Jerusalem to clarify that the PLO's position concerning Jerusalem is that Israel must relinquish its sovereignty over all of Jerusalem. The American consulate has made it clear that the American government supports this position. Indeed, all US documents issued at the American consulate in Jerusalem say "Jerusalem", with no reference to Israel.

  4. The US consulate in Jerusalem has embarked on a trade agreement between American firms and residents of the west bank. This trade agreement excludes any agreements with Jews who reside in these areas. The US consul who concluded this agreement, Mr. Edward Abington, has been hired by PLO as its lobbyist in the US.

  5. The Palestinian Authority issues and distributes maps of their future Palestinian state that obliterate Israel. These maps are included in the official brochures of the PA that are funded in part by grants from US AID and the EU.

  6. Arafat has granted asylum and protected status to Abu Abbas, the man who murdered Leon Klinghoffer. The American government refuses to ask Arafat to hand him over or even to arrest Abu Abbas.

  7. The Palestinian Authority offers protection to the thirty one killers of American and Israeli citizens. In the case of the murderer of an American citizen, 16 year old David Boim, the US consul refuses the request to verify if David Boim's convicted killer, Amjad Hanowi, is indeed serving his sentence in a PA jail. In the words of an American official, "we do not visit foreign jails".

  8. The American government has been providing military training to various arms of the Palestinian Liberation Army. In anticipation of an impending confrontation between the IDF and the PLA, there is concern in the IDF that American military personnel may be caught in the crossfire.

  9. Palestinian human rights organizations have asked the American government to condition future aid to the Palestinian entity on the cessation of Arafat's absolute subjugation of human rights and civil liberties. These appeals have met with a deaf ear in the American consul in Jerusalem.

  10. When I covered the talks in Shepherdstown, I asked the American state department spokesman if the US would demand that Syria cease its anti-Semitic diatribe in its schools and media. I also asked him if the US would demand that Syria cease its support and funding of the ten PLO terror groups in Damascus and the Hizbullah in Lebanon. The response that I got from the state department spokesman was that the US "hoped" that Syria would demonstrate "restraint". No more than that.

The question remains: Have these ten anti-Israel policy positions taken by the US administration been taken in coordination with the US Congress?

The immediate questions that American citizens who concerned for Israel may wish to raise with the Gore and Bush campaigns for president with their respective contacts the US Congress might include the following:

  1. What is the US position concerning the PLO demand for "right of return"?
  2. Why does US AID fund a curriculum that calls for Israel's extermination?
  3. Will the US finally recognize Israel's sovereignty in Jerusalem?
  4. Did the PLO hire US consul Edward Abington while he was still in office?
  5. Why does the US fund publications that feature maps that eliminate Israel?
  6. Why does the US not demand that the PLO arrest and extradite Abu Abbas?
  7. Does the US indeed monitor whereabouts of convicted killers of US citizens?
  8. What orders will the US give to its military advisors during a conflict?
  9. Why does the US not condition aid to the PA on reforms in human rights?
  10. Why does the US not make demands of Syria to cease support for terror?

As a footnote to this memo, I must ad that during my participation at the American Jewish Press Association annual conference in Washington, DC, which took place June 20-22, 2000, I raised many of these concerns with congresspeople and their staffers on Capitol Hill. The congresspeople and their staffers who received these questions were surprised to know that the US administration has indeed made any such tilt to support the positions advocated by the PLO.
