Genesis 6:9-11:32
Isaiah 54:1-55:5

"G-d said, "This is the sign that I set for the covenant between me and you, and every living creature with you, for all ages to come. I have set My bow in the clouds, and it shall serve as a sign of the covenant between Me and the earth.... so that the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh."--Genesis 9:12-13, 15

During the week of Oct. 22-28, 1995/ Tishri 28-Cheshvan 4, 5756, parshat Noach, the world celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of the United Nations. Noach features two themes that made this "coincidence" quite significant: the naming of the seventy root nations of the world and the story of the Tower of Babel. After the flood, the peoples of the seventy nations decided to unite in an effort to keep from ever again being wiped out by a flood, even though G-d had promised He would never destroy the earth again in this manner. Their united effort was not only a blatant act of disbelief, but a self-reliant defiance against His care for the world. The elite of the society wanted to build a great city and a tower in order to discourage the dispersion of the peoples over the earth and to "make a name" for themselves. This goal for urbanization wasn't what G-d intended. Nimrod, the grandson of Ham, was a great hunter and the leader of the generation. Nimrod's character epitomized the defiant rebellion of the generation, bent on warring with G-d Himself. The Midrash tells that at the top of the tower of Babel the people planned to put a statue of a man with a sword, challenging G-d to war.

Strangely, peoples of the earth did not choose a high place to build their tower. Shinar was a low place, ironically, where the dead were swept. In that low place the peoples of the earth perpetuated a rebellious religion, built around the fear of death. Although they professed to be striving to preserve life, their value of life was so askewed that a falling brick was mourned more than a falling worker. Those ancient people had vast power and knowledge, but they corrupted it by misusing it. When G-d saw that the unity of Mankind was merely for the purpose of willful sin, He confused the languages and separate the peoples.

Today we have the UN, whose lofty goals strive to unify Mankind. We hear talk of the New World Order, of One World government, which seeks to bring the Nations back together. This might be a worthy ambition, if not for the worrying echoes of Nimrod's challenge to G-d. "Together, we can solve all our problems. We don't need any help. Opposition will not be tolerated...."

This week, Oct. 29- Nov. 4, 2000/ Tishri 30-Cheshvan 6, 5761, the parsha reading is again Noach. Israel is at war with the Palestinians. Yassir Arafat is asking the UN to become involved. The attitude of the majority of the Nations tends to be pro-Palestinian, in favor of the "underdog". The Oslo Peace Process was initiated by the NWO people in order to bring the region into line with that agenda. This week Shimon Peres, who secretly began the negotiations for the Oslo agreement, met with Yassir Arafat to try to calm the situation and restore the negotiations.

Prophecy of comfort
"Noach" means "comfort". So, too, is the Haphtorah of Noach one of comfort to Israel.

For this [is as] the waters of Noah unto me:
for [as] I have sworn that the waters of Noah
should no more go over the earth;
so have I sworn that I would not be wroth with thee,
nor rebuke thee.
For the mountains shall depart, and the hills be removed;
but my kindness shall not depart from thee,
neither shall the covenant of my peace be removed,
saith the L-RD that hath mercy on thee.
G-d reminds Israel of the first of His covenants, that with all the peoples of the earth. The punishment was warranted, yet He swore He would never again destroy the earth in such a way. Through the remembrance of that covenant, He invokes memory of the covenant with Israel and swears He will always remember and have mercy, that no punishment will be a final act, a turning completely away from the Nation.
Behold, I have created the smith that bloweth the coals in the fire,
and that bringeth forth an instrument for his work;
and I have created the waster to destroy.
No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper;
and every tongue [that] shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn.
This [is] the heritage of the servants of the L-RD,
and their righteousness [is] of me, saith the L-RD.
Even in when the worst circumstances arise, know they are not out of control, know that I, the L-rd, am always the master of the situation. Know, too, that in the end I will bring you through to victory, G-d assures Israel. No weapon formed against you will ultimately prevail, but will be destroyed once its use is fulfilled. No matter what method the enemy devises, he will not prevail. Terrorists' bombs or scandals brought into world courts will not succeed in destroying Israel. You will be vindicated of any judgement brought against you in the court of heaven, where all things on earth are decided. For this is your heritage as servants of the L-rd.

Incline your ear, and come unto me:
hear, and your soul shall live;
and I will make an everlasting covenant with you,
[even] the sure mercies of David.
Behold, I have given him [for] a witness to the people,
a leader and commander to the people.
Shema Israel! Listen! Listen to the words of life, the words of Torah that are essential to the everlasting covenant! David is a witness to the people and on behalf of the people; he is a leader and a commander to the people. Even as we endure the birth pains of the coming of Mashiach, David pleads Israel's case daily in the courts of heaven. David--the very soul of Mashiach.

Isaiah 54:1 -55:5
Sing, O barren, thou [that] didst not bear;
break forth into singing, and cry aloud,
thou [that] didst not travail with child:
for more [are] the children of the desolate
than the children of the married wife, saith the LORD.
Enlarge the place of thy tent,
and let them stretch forth the curtains of thine habitations:
spare not, lengthen thy cords, and strengthen thy stakes;
For thou shalt break forth on the right hand and on the left;
and thy seed shall inherit the Gentiles,
and make the desolate cities to be inhabited.
Fear not; for thou shalt not be ashamed:
neither be thou confounded;
for thou shalt not be put to shame:
for thou shalt forget the shame of thy youth,
and shalt not remember
the reproach of thy widowhood any more.
For thy Maker [is] thine husband;
the L-RD of hosts [is] his name;
and thy Redeemer the Holy One of Israel;
The G-d of the whole earth shall He be called.
For the L-RD hath called thee as a woman forsaken
and grieved in spirit, and a wife of youth,
when thou wast refused, saith thy G-d.
For a small moment have I forsaken thee;
but with great mercies will I gather thee.
In a little wrath I hid my face from thee for a moment;
but with everlasting kindness will I have mercy on thee,
saith the L-RD thy Redeemer.
For this [is as] the waters of Noah unto me:
for [as] I have sworn that the waters of Noah
should no more go over the earth;
so have I sworn that I would not be wroth with thee,
nor rebuke thee.
For the mountains shall depart, and the hills be removed;
but my kindness shall not depart from thee,
neither shall the covenant of my peace be removed,
saith the L-RD that hath mercy on thee.
O thou afflicted, tossed with tempest,[and] not comforted,
behold, I will lay thy stones with fair colors,
and lay thy foundations with sapphires.
And I will make thy windows of agates,
and thy gates of carbuncles, and all thy borders of pleasant stones.
And all thy children [shall be] taught of the L-RD;
and great [shall be] the peace of thy children.
In righteousness shalt thou be established:
thou shalt be far from oppression;
for thou shalt not fear: and from terror;
for it shall not come near thee.
Behold, they shall surely gather together,
[but] not by me: whosoever shall gather together against thee shall fall for thy sake.
Behold, I have created the smith that bloweth the coals in the fire,
and that bringeth forth an instrument for his work;
and I have created the waster to destroy.
No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper;
and every tongue [that] shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn.
This [is] the heritage of the servants of the L-RD,
and their righteousness [is] of me, saith the L-RD. Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters,
and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat;
yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.
Wherefore do ye spend money for [that which is] not bread?
and your labour for [that which] satisfieth not?
hearken diligently unto me, and eat ye [that which is] good,
and let your soul delight itself in fatness.
Incline your ear, and come unto me:
hear, and your soul shall live;
and I will make an everlasting covenant with you,
[even] the sure mercies of David.
Behold, I have given him [for] a witness to the people,
a leader and commander to the people.
Behold, thou shalt call a nation [that] thou knowest not,
and nations [that] knew not thee shall run unto thee
because of the LORD thy God, and for the Holy One of Israel;
for he hath glorified thee.

Shalom from Zion,
~Miriam~
