This is an exciting week on Rose Barracks. A large group of soldiers are coming home. They have been "down range" for almost a year.
The kids are very excited, almost uncontrollable. During the past few weeks, I have been asking kids to write me something about their dads and moms. One thing I have noticed is that all the kids know EXACTLY when their parent is returning.
Below are some of the "essays" I have received. I have edited these "essays" to omit names and dates of troop movements:
K. - 4th grade: | My Daddy is in the 1st brigade. The first day I came from the States, my Daddy was already in the 1st Brigade. He went to France, and he was in the war when I was 1 year old. I am 10 years old. When he was in France, I missed him. |

T. - 3rd grade: | My Dad is in the Army. He is a staff sergeant. He is in Kosovo at Camp X. I miss him. He will be back in 5 days. In 2 months, we will move to Tuscon, Arizona. |
D. - 4th grade: | My Dad is in the Army. He is a Staff Sergeant. Right now my Dad is in Kosovo where people are mean to him. He has been there for six months and I miss him very much. |
D. - 4th grade: | My Dad is in the Army, and has to get $20 to buy some crazy FUBU that I don't like and my dog doesn't like. Some years my Dad leaves for days, weeks, months, or for 1 year. But those people in Kosovo needed him bad and children needed to go to school. |
G. - 4th grade: | My Dad is in the Army. I live with my Mom, my Dad, and my sister. He is the XO (Executive officer) for "LTC X". My Dad went down range as a peacekeeper. He's gone a lot. His battalion is stationed in Camp X, Kosovo. He says not to worry because "LTC X" is a good commander and won't let anything happen to my Dad. I sometimes miss my Dad while he is gone. When he gets back, he will not have the same job. Sometimes it seems like forever before he gets home. Others it seems like a day. |
G. - 4th grade: | I feel sad a lot that my Dad is down range because I really miss him. But then again I know that he is helping people that need help. I will e so happy when my Dad comes home. |
C - 1st grade: | My Dad is in the Army and my Dad gets deployed a lot. |
K. - 4th grade: | My Dad is in the Army. He is down in Kosovo helping the children. I love him a lot. He is usually at work. I like it when he brings me with him to the office. I can't wait until he comes home. When he does, we will go on a trip around Germany. I don't really know where we are going, but my Mom says we are going. He is a sergeant. |
B. - 4th grade: | My Daddy is in the Army. On (date), my Daddy went to Kosovo. When my Daddy got on the bus I was crying. My brother and sister were playing. I really miss my Daddy a lot. |
C. - 3rd grade: | My Dad goes TDY a lot. He either foes to the States or Kosovo or Bosnia. He stays for a week. |
R. - 4th grade: | My Dad is in the Army. He went to Bosnia in 1995. I miss him when he goes. He takes me to the office sometimes. He went to Albania in 1999 |
