The apple named after Loammi Baldwin was discovered by him near Chestnut street in Wilmington, Mass. during one of his trips to survey the route of the canal.Today, there's a stone monument at this spot. The Baldwin apple is sharp tasting, juicy, and was highly regarded for its keeping quality through cold New England winters in the days before refrigeration. Loammi Baldwin planted orchards of these apples on his own estate and gave away numerous grafting branches to others.Back to Loammi Baldwin ![]()
