Levity is the spice of life.
So we at Team Bonet strive to keep the jokes coming. To pass away the time,
and because I think a few of us have willingly crossed into part-time cuckoo
territory. Take our good friend and self-proclaimed fossil John ("that's
Treize sama to you"), for example. He RPGs Goku, and I think he's having
too much of a good time with him for a man whose passion is opera, ballet,
and all things theatre. Maybe it's because he's studying Psychology. Regardless,
he's a pretty nifty Goku. He lets out these very long and exquisite "SanzOOooooo!"s
at least twice a day, then turns around and throws one great, cyclonic
tantrum which usually ends in "Sanzo, I'm hungry." He really reminds us
of how truly undernourished graduate students can become, too. He'll crack
open the fridge, peer in, take out some carrot sticks or heat up some ramen,
munch for a while, then fix our RPG Sanzo with a stare and growl out "I...
want... meat."
We've grown so used to Treize's
version of Goku, actually, that Goku's actual set of pipes in the TV series
staggered us. He has a very high pitched, somewhat nasal voice. It's very
annoying, and takes some getting used to if your first taste of the Saiyuki
anime
was the OVA. Or if you have a crazy friend who loves to make voices.

Having already talked a
bit about Goku in Gensomaden it's time once again to visit Gaiden.
I love Goku in Gaiden, you see. Not only is his character design
a decided improvement over the red, orange, and yellow cyclone of Gensomaden,
he's also much more vulnerable and endearing. In Gaiden Goku is
a full kid. He's sweeter, and his loneliness is stressed much more strongly.
His attachment to Sanzo's past incarnation, Konzen, for example is physically
presented by having Goku grip his (very) long hair as they walk. I find
this touching. It's as if Goku is afraid of taking Konzen's hand (as well
he should be; Konzen has a nasty temper), but craves comfort so much that
he settles for taking Konzen's hair instead. This is a very natural way
for a kid to act, and I find that it makes this Goku much more likeable
than his older self. Of course, I can't reasonably expect 500 years to
pass and still have Goku act in the same way. I'm just glad an alternative
exists. Even if he's too cute at times. As I said before, I just can't
hate him.
Kono baka saru.
