Editor, AV Press;

I was apalled at M. Brown's letter on November 2nd advocating a return of the draft. While there's been a lot of discussion over the last few months over the possibility of a draft, few people have been bold enough to come out and say that one shoudl be implemented. Only one, to my knowledge, has said that such a thing would be good.

The essense of Ms. Brown's suggestion is that since people are not behaving in a manner that she would like, they must be forced to. She calls it "learning discipline" to have every aspect of your life controlled by someone else, and calls it patriotism to learn that you must be completely obedient to any and all authority. She makes these suggestions while she is herself immune from the effects of her suggestions; she makes "A Modest Proposal".

The draft, if it returns, would be a bad thing for America. America is a land of liberty, not servitude. America is a land of freedom, not slavery. If Ms. Brown wishes to engage in such practices, she should start by volunteering herself to a life of servitude. Let her practice her beliefs on her own hide, not the hide of innocent others whose only fault is not agreeing with her.
