Dear Letters Editor: Rep. Chris Smith blocks Rep. Ron Paul's "Get Out of the UN" bill More and more Americans are demanding that the United States withdraw from the money and power hungry United Nations. More and more "mainstream" conservative groups are joining their forces with ours in support of Rep. Ron Paul's (R-TX) "American Sovereignty Restoration Act" (H.R. 1146). Several members of Congress have taken bold measures to block UN programs and treaties. Step by step we are successfully chipping away at UN support. But as the bill moves into committee we have run into one major roadblock. That roadblock is Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ). As chairman of the International Operations and Human Rights Committee, Smith has the power to call for hearings on H.R. 1146 - or deny them. And to this date, Smith has refused to allow debate on H.R. 1146. The question is, "What are you afraid of Congressman Smith?" Are you afraid that the hearings will reveal to the American taxpayers that U.S. membership in the UN has cost them close to $30,000,000,000 since 1945? Afraid that they will learn that the UN has suggested that world governments should tax the Internet as a funding mechanism to buffer UN coffers by at least $70 million annually? Afraid that hearings will reveal their anti-American agenda, including free-standing armies and global governance? It has been boldly stated by former U.N. Secretary General Boutros Boutros-Ghali that "The time of absolute and exclusive sovereignty, however, has passed..." That's the real danger of the United Nations. And that's why the United States must get out of the United Nations. To achieve that, we must break Rep. Smith's roadblock and DEMAND that hearings be held on H.R. 1146.
