In the Decisions
of the Superior Courts of NSW 1788-1899 there is a
case where one of the defendants is a John Hooper. It was a murder
case heard in January 1831 where John and two other men were charged
with the murder of a prisoner in Newcastle jail. It is believed this
is my John as the 1828 Census shows him working at Newcastle
jail. John and one of the co-accused were found guilty of manslaughter
and sentenced to a further three months imprisonment having already served
seven months prior to trial. This would explain how/why John & Rebecca
ended up in Sydney - it would also have been a difficult time for Rebecca
who was pregnant with Amelia.
Rebecca remarried in 1838 but no suitable death for John found
at this stage. Note that John may have been returned to Van Diemans
Land. |
