Alfred William Gaskell

Alfred William GASKELL was born in 1888 in Shropshire, England. He was the second child born to Joseph GASKELL (1845-1916) and his second wife Elizabeth DAVENPORT (c.1857-?). Alfred had five half-siblings from his father's first marriage and there were another seven children born to Elizabeth. Alfred came to Australia in late 1916 or early 1917.

In April 1917, Alfred enlisted in the AIF. He gave his occupation as Fitter and was living in Albert Street, Brisbane, QLD, AUS at the time. His next of kin - his mother - was still living in England, in Copthorne Rd Shrewsbury.

Because of his medical history, Alfred was discharged from the army in June of 1917. He had undergone a spleenectomy approximately four years previously in New Orleans, U.S.A. after receiving a blow to the abdomen. His papers further describe him as having a median scar the whole length of his abdomen with two ventral Hernias.

Alfred subsequently married Margaret Ann MCKEAN (1893-1979) in November 1917 in Calliope, QLD and they had five children.

Alfred died in Queensland in January 1980.
