Powell - You are DEAD ON with all of this ... The good news? MOST of the folks I know who are (a) still active in some form in the "official" LP, and (b) functioning as intellectually critical human beings (an admittedly small sample, but growing steadily?) ... saw through this one instantly ... which is why the letter ain't working!
... any more than WIllis' latest screed about the "FEC legal challenge" is going to....
