When guns are outlawed, only the outlaws will sell guns.
Exactly one year ago this column headlined "The $200=20
Machine Gun." We predicted that when guns become=20
illegal to own and sell, then the criminal element=20
would rush in to fill the demand. Thieves, smugglers=20
and black market gun makers could supply machine guns=20
for about $200 apiece.
About three years ago, the British government all=20
but outlawed private firearms ownership in Britain.=20
Because one vicious killer used a firearm to commit=20
multiple murders in 1996, victim-disarming politicians=20
rushed to ban nearly all private gun ownership and=20
possession nationwide.=20
The result? According to the January 16, 2000=20
edition of the Sunday Times of London, "up to 3 million=20
illegal guns are in circulation in Britain, leading to=20
a rise in drive-by shootings and gangland-style=20
executions."
What are the prices of illegal guns? According to=20
the Sunday Times, "a third of young criminals, [ages 15=20
to 25 with prior convictions], own or have access to=20
guns ranging from Beretta sub-machineguns to Luger=20
pistols, which can be bought from underworld dealers=20
for as little as =A3200." ($320 U.S.)
How do the guns get into the "gun free" island=20
nation? The Sunday Times reported: "Criminals have=20
maintained a steady flow of smuggled guns from eastern=20
Europe, exhibition weapons reactivated in illegal=20
"factories" run by underworld dealers, and guns stolen=20
from private collections." =20
=20
As predicted, when ownership of all guns becomes=20
illegal, the buyers will shift toward the higher power=20
weapons. "There is a move from the pistol and the=20
shotgun to automatic weapons," British Detective=20
Superintendent Keith Hudson told the Sunday Times.
British criminals have all the guns they want. The=20
Sunday Times thus reported: "Detectives say modern=20
weapons are fast becoming fashion accessories among=20
young drug dealers protecting themselves and their=20
territory."
Are British people safer? Crime rates are soaring=20
in Britain. The British Home Office, according to the=20
Sunday Times, released figures showing that "overall,=20
armed crime rose 10% in 1998" -- the year after=20
national handgun prohibition began.
Usually, when the government passes a law that=20
causes problems for people, the citizens can petition=20
the government to change the law. Gun prohibition,=20
however, does more than just endanger citizens by=20
preventing them from protecting their lives and loved=20
ones.=20
Gun prohibition damages the whole society by=20
creating a huge opportunity for organized crime to=20
prosper. Even if the prohibition law is later=20
repealed, the organized crime elements might be=20
entrenched with enough money and power to get into=20
other legal or illegal businesses. Political=20
corruption, started during the prohibition, likewise=20
will not just disappear when the laws are changed=20
again.
The British example shows how the ultimate "gun=20
control" will likely work in America. Criminals will=20
get rich selling illegal weapons to other criminals,=20
and ordinary citizens will suffer a violent crime wave.=20
The national "instant check" system and the "Brady=20
Bill" won't even matter.=20
Americans must not give up their right to personal=20
self-defense. We must not turn over the firearms=20
industry to thieves and thugs. And we must not let=20
Americans be so gullible as to believe the "dial 911"=20
false promise of police protection, when actually we=20
are legally responsible for protecting ourselves. (Get=20
