Okay folks here is another candidate for the LP nomination. We know
about Browne and Hess (if not ask), what do we have on Gorman?

Dear Friend of the Libertarian Party,
I'm Don Gorman, former Libertarian leader of the New Hampshire
legislature. I'm running for our Presidential nomination. I'd like your
support.
Perhaps you're going to the Party National Convention this Summer. If you
are, I'd like your vote. Perhaps you have other plans. You can still
help me win the nomination.
At this point, you probably have a few questions. Questions like: Who is
Don Gorman? What are my issues? What do I promise? How will I
campaign?
After I've answered those, I hope you have one more question:
How can I support Don Gorman for President?
WHO IS DON GORMAN?
I'm a real politician. I served four terms in the New Hampshire State
Legislature, two as a Libertarian and two (before I knew better) as a
Republican. I earned the respect of my Democratic-Republican colleagues.
I got real legislation passed into law.
I'm an executive. I was Master of a 1600-ton ocean-going tug. I've been
responsible for hundreds of lives. I sailed to Africa and the Middle
East. I dealt with foreign bureacrats and foreign customs: communists,
dictators, religious fanatics, friends and foes of America -- I've dealt
with them all.
Like freedom, the sea demands eternal vigilance: those who fail in this
duty could lose their cargo, their ship, and their life.
Americans demand their President be a politician and an executive. They
accept no substitute. Executive experience can be political, like
Governor Reagan. Executives get political experience: General Eisenhower
got his commanding the Allies in Europe.
To be President, you've got to have real political experience. You've got
to have real executive experience.
I've got both.
I've been elected.
I've made life and death decisions.
And I'm our only Presidential candidate with those credentials.
WHAT ARE MY STANDS ON THE ISSUES?
I completely support the entire Libertarian Party national platform.
This is a short letter. I'll mention a few issues.
The War on Drugs endangers you, turning users into muggers and robbers.
It endangers your children, paying pushers to peddle on playgrounds. It
corrupts judges and policemen. It endangers liberty, because Republicrats
think it lets them suspend our Constitution. Warrantless searches? Gun
control? Silencing legalization advocates? You name a freedom. The War
on Drugs endangers it.
Let's look at one threat: Civil forfeiture. Civil forfeiture is legalized
theft. It says the government takes your money, and keeps it if you're
found *innocent*. That's right, *innocent*. The most basic principle of
American government is that the legislature must appropriate money before
it is spent. Civil forfeiture gives the Executive an uncontrolled cash
source. It's an insidious threat to your freedom, and it must end.
I'm going to Waco. My position is
Never Again! will American army tanks kill American women.
Never Again! will American army tanks kill American children.
Never Again! will American army tanks kill new-born American
infants.
Never Again!
Foreign policy: The Constitution says only Congress may declare war.
Not
Bill Clinton. Not George Bush. Congress. Without Congressional
approval, we've attacked country after country that posed no threat to
us:
Somalia. Sudan. Yugoslavia. Panama. It's painfully obvious: we're not
firing Patriot missiles from Stealth bombers, we're firing Monica
missiles
from Broadrick bombers. We're launching wars because the President
needs
to distract the public from his scandals. I say: Never Again!
Government is too big! There's no better example than the Department of
Education, which has zero Constitutional basis. I'll campaign to give
schools to parents, not Federal bureaucrats.
Second Amendment: I'm 100% in favor of the Right to Keep and Bear Arms.
Period. I'm doing campaign stops at gun manufacturers - to show my
support. And to remind them we're the one Party that says it supports
gun
ownership -- and means it.
I DO NOT PROMISE
Lots of people make promises. A chicken in every pot. A car in every
garage. A Libertarian Congress in 2006.
Lots of people ask you to imagine. Imagine a Libertarian debating
Gore-Bush. Imagine me getting 15% of the vote. I can imagine with the
best of them.
I'm not going to. I'm going to tell the truth. I'm going to give goals
we
can reach. That's a lot less fun. But it's more honest.
Let's be realistic. The Republicrats have 100 times our voter base, 200
times our cash, 1000 times our elected officials. That's a big hurdle
for
us.
I'll always tell the press "it's up to the people" who wins.
I'll always tell you the truth. In 2000, I'll be there to help other
Libertarians win. In 2000, I'll be there to strengthen local Parties,
so
we can win in the future. In 2000, I'll be there to strengthen local
candidates running winnable campaigns.
WHY SHOULD WE RUN DON GORMAN?
WHAT WILL HE DO WITH OUR PRESIDENTIAL NOMINATION?
Front porch radio campaigns went out with Calvin Coolidge.
I'll campaign on the road. You can do remote radio talk shows from
anywhere. I'll do them from my hotel, not my front porch. I'll do them
in the host's own studio -- it's a lot harder for a host to insult you
to
your face.
You can't meet local press if you stay-at-home. You can't support local
candidates if you stay-at-home. You can't do joint fundraisers -- you
and
our electable local Libertarians -- if you stay-at-home. You can't
boost
troop morale, shaking hands and leading by example, if you stay-at-home.
To build a stronger party, I'll spend four months on the road, July to
November, because
front porch radio campaigns went out with Calvin Coolidge.
The big national networks don't care about our campaigns. But if I
appear
in Modesto or Waco ( I'm going to Waco; ask my opponents about their
visits) I'm the only Presidential candidate they get. In most places,
a
Presidential candidate is big-time news, enough to bring out the local
TV
station, newspaper, and talk show hosts, so I can put the Libertarian
message and photos of electable Libertarian candidates on the front page
of the local paper.
So what does our Libertarian Party get out of a Gorman campaign?
We get publicity. I'll campaign from Maine to Hawaii, from Florida to
Alaska, broadcasting our Libertarian message loud and clear.
We get inspiration. This spring, someone told me we're running a
thousand
candidates. I said "That's very nice. In which state? Which *one*
state?"
We get candidates. If you are running, you're the greatest party member
I
can imagine meeting. I'll be here to help you. I'll be here to
persuade
your friends to help you, too, because every candidate needs a campaign
team. I'll be here to persuade Libertarians across America to run for
entry-level positions, so we eventually develop credible people to run
for
State Senate and Governor and Congress.
We should run tens of thousands of candidates, this year and every year.
We can reach that goal. In 2004, when I ask which one state those
thousand candidates are running in, I want to be handed a list. A long
list. A list of states each with a thousand Libertarians on the ballot,
each of them actively campaigning.
And in November 2004, I want to be handed another list. Another long
list. A list of all the victories. That's the Libertarian America I
want
to reach, and if you make me your nominee I will help get you that
America.
HOW CAN YOU HELP ME?
Run for local office. Prove I'm right.
I need votes in Anaheim. We can talk all we want, but in the end I need
1/2 plus one of our delegates to vote Gorman for President.
If you're a delegate, I'd love to talk. Give me a call: 603-463-7771.
Send me an email: taylorgorman@juno.com. I'll be happy to call back.
Or
drop me a line: P.O. Box 94, Deerfield NH 03037.
I need volunteers. In every state, I need people to spread the word
about
the Gorman campaign, organize my local support, and help me win. A good
campaign needs a good campaign staff, and I'll be happy for all the help
I
can get.
I need money. Visiting state conventions Costs Money! Going to Waco
Costs Money! Campaigning Costs Money! And -- it pains me to say --
complying with FEC regulations Costs Money! [But I will comply, because
civil disobedience should be saved for when it really counts: Jim Crow
Laws. School Desegregation. The Draft.]
How much money? Hundreds of thousands? Millions? Let's be real, folks.
There are 1500 delegates. $150,000 is one hundred dollars per delegate.
If I spend $150,000 to get the nomination, you should ask why we're
running a spendthrift for President.
If you get me a million dollars, I won't spend most of your money on
campaign staffers, office space, and hangers-on -- because our
Libertarian
Party never had a million dollars to throw away.
If you get me a million dollars, I'll spend most of your money on
campaigning -- campaigning to support your local candidates and state
parties.
I'm asking you to give me money. You have a right to know what I did
with
it. I will voluntarily report how I spent *YOUR * money, both to LP
News
and my web site. Reporting is what proper leadership demands -- whether
the FEC requires it or not -- and I will give you proper leadership.
Please give. Every penny helps.
