Public Affairs director of Gunowners of America, John Velleco stated, "He
was let go due to a disagreement with a few Board of Directors on how we
implement our no-compromise stance".
This was the best I could get from GOA's Public Affairs Director John
Velleco after 10-15 mins. of conversation (in addition to the, "frankly, it
is none of your business" :)
I'm going to give my personal impression based on the 'been there, heard
that' experiences of the past,... GOA has turned down the dark path. Dennis
saw it and did his best by standing firm. I am certain he got all of the
same retoric from the Board of Directors that we all have heard over the
years from the NRA and those like them because that is exactly what I got
from the GOA's Public Affairs director John Velleco. "A no-compromise
position on gun rights can be promoted in many different ways...".
I did get an acknowledgement that it wasn't because Dennis did something
wrong like run up an escort bill on the company credit card or some such
crap. It was because he couldn't/wouldn't submit to a demand from the Board
of Directors,... and the GOA isn't going to share what that disagreement
was. I shared with Mr. Velleco that this was expected by long time activist.
That when the GOA got to a level of influence that they could swing
elections they would either be infiltrated at high levels or be enticed
enough to change their successful tactics in advocating gun rights to
further "the cause" of other interest. I have no doubt that political
interest (R's,... D's others, what's the difference?) would target the GOA
for negotiations that would limit them from being such an unknown factor in
elections (the powers that be hate when that happens :)
I got the feeling that I was hitting a nerve. He wouldn't say what the
disagreement was between Dennis and the Board (that in itself is interesting
and I said that it'll come out sooner or later,... it always does) and he
kept on the tact that there are many different ways to promote a
"no-compromise position". I got the feeling that he was of the opinion that
NOT targeting bad Republicans wasn't technically a violation of
"no-compromise". I guess you could argue that. But it does make you a
worthless freedom fighter.
Call them and ask what was the disagreement between Dennis Fusaro and the
Board of Directors of GOA. I think this information is valuable and "our
business". I told Mr. Velleco that it was our business only to the point
that the information will help individuals decide wiether to promote or
denounce support of GOA and that the reasons for GOA's growth of the past 5
or so years was (IMHO) due t the type of efforts of Dennis Fusaro and his
"cause them PAIN" tactics and that deviation from that method of activism
would cause the most productive to seek another representative of gun rights
that will fill that void they create by abandoning this type of activism.
This is when he confirmed what I feared. "You're wrong, they'll stay with
GOA". How and when he said this in the conversation gave me the same
impression I got from the Republicans and the NRA when they had the attitude
of 'Where else are you going to go'.
So just call and ask a simple question. "What was the disagreement between
Dennis Fusaro and the Board of Directors of Gunowners of America that cause
his termination?" The refusal to answer is the answer. I am of the opinion
that Dennis Fusaro knew that this would come out and was willing to take the
fall on this specific issue (whatever it is) because he knew that it would
be very revealing to us all. I think that GOA knows this too and will do
their best to avoid the answer (very Clintonesque :) Should the GOA issue a
statement that is inaccurate,... THEN Dennis can be expected to respond in
full. I think that GOA knows this and wishes the whole thing would "just go
away" so that they can peacefully sit down to supper with their new friends.
Mr. Velleco also asked that I judge them by their actions described in their
communications to the net. He decided to close the conversation when I
replied that that would be like evaluating a governmental agency (thinking
of BATF :) by the reports an agency released.
Call them and see what you think. Talk to the other officers of GOA and see
what their perspective is (bet they try to keep their jobs). Then send me
you're impressions,... I'm curious.
