I'll beleive that Tempe is the choice AFTER I see land cleared AND foundati
on completed.
Just predicting,

nment facility
Dear Editors:
Your (February 25th) editorial concerning the "threats" of Sky Harbor
International Airport to Tempe neighborhoods ignores a few truisms. With
respect to the placement of the new football stadium to be funded with our
tax dollars, remember: "Safety First!" Also, "Safety is Relative!" And,
from what I saw when I joined American Airlines in 1954, the airport
(Arizona's gateway to the world) "got there first", long before Tempe
amounted to "a hill of beans". As they would have said when the population
of Phoenix was less than 100,000, planning to put an entertainment facility
at the end of the grass runway would be "a hell of a way to run a railroad"
.
Just because the FAA might approve a new 200-foot tall structure to be buil
t
in the path of planes taking off in an eastbound direction does not
ameliorate concerns that it will be a dangerous situation. Both British
Airways and Lufthansa will be operating jumbo jets non-stop from PHX to
Europe. Their planes will be taking off at near maximum FAA-approved
take-off weights during Europe's peak tourism season when the air
temperatures around Phoenix are in the triple digits - all near-the-limit
factors existing at the same time. It is the combination of factors that
compromises safety. So, why tempt fate when you know the FAA has set their
airport obstacle standard for normal conditions?
Summer temperatures in Phoenix are not normal. Six thousand mile non-stop
flights, fully-loaded with passengers on any Phoenix summer day are what we
want to see for our economy. However, in the context of the "200-foot
standard" set by the FAA for every location - worldwide - it is not a norma
l,
safe decision to plan for a 200-foot entertainment facility directly in the
take-off path.
Should a twin-engine jumbo jet lose one engine during a very hot day, there
is a great risk that the combined circumstances would kill 500 people. Why
tempt fate? The behavior of our Arizona planners is not like putting troll
ey
car tracks in the middle of busy streets to kill one pedestrian at a time.
The plan to put the 67,000 seat entertainment facility in the path of
millions of air travelers should be changed. A stitch in time might save
thousands.=20=20
So, dear Editors, please print these observations in paper. The life you
save may be your own.
Sincerely,
Joseph B. Ryan
