Golden Boy
Audience: R
Genre: Comedy
Usual Running Time:

6 episodes total
Contains: nudity, perverted sexual/toilet humor, sexual content
Rating: B+

For starters, Goldenboy is one daring anime. It took me a while to figure out a proper content rating for this series in which the content went from light-hearted to the point where the perverted sexual humor got so extreme that it came close to hentai (adult) anime. But like a good Farrelly Brothers movie, American Pie, and South Park episode, Goldenboy has extremely fun, raunchy (and naughty) laughs.

The anime follows the misadventures of Kintaro Oi, a college graduate who travels from job to job on his mountain bike,(The Shooting Star) in search of adventure, the lessons of life and of course, women. However his perverted nature tends to get him into trouble and some really wacky situations. (Such as working for an all female software company, saving a noodle shop from an innocent girl's greedy boyfriend, a nifty (yet impossible) bicycle vs. motorcycle race, to helping an animation studio getting the latest film done.) A major highlight of Goldenboy had to be the main character himself, Kintaro is very hilarious (especially from a male point of view) Everything from his overactive personality, weird laugh to his bizzare facial expressions. His perverted nature does tend to get him in trouble, but he always able to prove to women that he is much smarter and amazing than he looks.(Women tend to fall for him when they finally realize this, when it's too late.)It's very hard for anyone to hate Kintaro. (A very fun and surprising main character.)

The content is a somewhat uneasy mix between Romance-Comedy to a perverted sex-comedy. While I prefer the perverted sex Comedy elements which is a special trademark to the series, things tend to get very light-hearted and serious which may turn off or disappoint and consider it a low point of the anime(while still retaining some laugh out loud moments) such as episode 3. But otherwise this is definetly one series I would'nt reccommend showing your mother. There are some really raunchy moments (There is one running joke when Kintaro simply loses it when he glances over a toilet a beautiful woman uses.) And Episode 4 is one episode I definately don't recommend eating through. Other episodes such as 1, 2 and especially 5 get so daring and extreme with it's sexual humor that many will see this anime as hentai. But the entire execution of the anime is so funny that it's nearly impossibble to go through one episode without a smirk or dry eye. (Having only seen the subtitled version, the Japanese voices further add on to the laughs.) But also this isn't the most realistic anime you'll ever watch, relating to the situations Kintaro gets into, but no one will hardly care.

The animation and character design is great, and the quality never sinks at any point during the series, one has to watch episode 5 to really appreciate the animation,(Check out the realistic way Kintaro pedals that bike!) The music is another highlight, like a good Danny Elfman score, the music is different from stereotypical anime J-Pop and varies from certain music styles(from calypso to jazz) and it matches every situation well, and humorously executed.

If there is one problem, it's the fact the the entire experience leaves you wanting more. Like so many other anime, the creators seemed to intend on leaving the rest to the imagination after the ending. But other than that, Golden boy is daring, different and very raunchy, leaving hilarious results and guilty laughs.(Also check out the last episode where the mention the series creator and animation studio.) But if there is one thing to be learned from this, it's that life truly is a study.(Study, Study, Study!)
