Despite the really hokey title, (which is probably why this anime didn't do well in sales) Mighty Space Miners is masterful piece of animation. Too bad the entire experience is bittersweet.
In the 21st Century, exploration of outer space has grown. Mining of space objects are made through the Planet Catcher Corporation, which exists on the asteroid colony of Tortatis. We are introduced to main character, Nanbu
Ushiwaka, a brash 12-year old hell-bent on passing his test and becoming an adult and an excellent miner like his father (who looks like Kaji from Evangelion) even when disaster strikes. And it does.Everything about this anime is excellent and very realistic, from the ship and mechanical designs, character designs(no pink or blue hair), and space physics. The action scenes hardly have any lapses of logic as well. The sound is also very well done and the score by Kenji Kawai is great. The characters are also very realistic and intelligent.
The only thing keeping Mighty Space Miners from receiving a higher grade is that it's all only 60 minutes and the anime ends (just like a syndicated U.S. TV anime), leaving you hanging when the storyline starts to get even more interesting. (The anime was never completed in Japan.) Quite sad, really, because this is a great anime and very thoughtful as well.
Otherwise, this is an excellent and entertaining way to spend 60 minutes.
