The Mystic Stables
THE ASRIRE KNOLL
You enter what seems to be an empty section of the Knoll, cut off from the rest by protruding hedges. It is lush and green, with long padding grasses making the ground soft and a cool breeze rustling the long beds of flowers glowing at the foot of the hedges and small saplings the dot the empty, but in itself beautiful, area. All the flowers, those of the hedge beds and on the vines growing up the small saplings, are all blue - thousands of hues of blue! You reach out and run your fingers over the soft petal tips of several flowers, catching draps of dew...
"They have been that way since I came here..."
The voice behind you, though quiet, startles you and you jump away from the flowers and the young tree, thinking perhaps your curiosity has led you to trespass beyond your welcome. But the creature you behold is not angry, but instead very serene, standing many feet away, head turned. The large mare's voice does not seem to fit her appearance...
She continues, slowly, still not coming any closer. She seems very shy, and as you look at her more closely, you see the fine lines of old, long-healed scars, as well as the obvious marks of very bad wounds. She must have seen much in her time...
"Do not worry, stranger. You've done nothing wrong. I am Moonlit Sea."
You step forward slightly and she nods, allowing you to approach her. Her deep blue fur shines, turning darker around the scarred and furless fresh along her tapered neck. To reach out to stroke her back, but she dances away a step, hanging her head slightly.
"I'm...I'm sorry. But I'm just not used to..." She hesitates and you move forward to place a steadying hand on the large mare's shoulder. This time, she does not resist and you feel her relax with a long, heart-weary sigh. When she is relaxed enough, she begins to speak again, telling you of herself and her life before she arrived in the Hold.
"My name, as I said, is Moonlit Sea, and it is appropriate, for there is nothing I love more than to walk on windy shores in the dark, with only the moon to light my way. It somehow makes me feel...at home. You see, all Asrire Unicorns are born in this realm, but we do not stay here. Drawn by who-knows-what pull of our instinct, we wander into the portals of our homeland and move from dimension to dimension and to other realms, maybe many other realms. When we reach maturity, the lifeforce of our lands call us back to this realm and we take up a home here and make for ourselves a life with the memories of our childhood adventures left as nothing more than that...memories. But I have no such memories. I do not recall my life before I was called to step through the portal, returning to this world to this world. I know my parents. They are Midnight Sun and SunFire...but the time I spent wandering the portals...it is all...gone. I came back to my homelands already fully grown, bearing scars from a life I know nothing of. I only know that the place in which I spent a good amount of that lost time was dark...but not so as in a place of evil. I have vague dreams and slight recollections of much moonlight, as if I lived in a place where no sun ever shined..." She sighs and you stroke her soft back.
"But this place is better. There are beaches and moonlight for me to enjoy, and many creatures for me to become close to...many unicorns to run with, and I can truly say that I am happy. For once, yes, truly happy. And then, another joy has arrived to me..." Just as she speaks, another Asrire mare walks through the hedgeing.
As soon as she spots you, she trots quickely to Moonlit Sea and hides closely behind her. Moon smiles a tiny smile at the shy young mare and makes introductions. "This, travelor, is Sea Heart, born of Sea Gazer and Blue Blood. She is my herd sibling and she is very shy." The young mare giggles lightly at that and nuzzles the older mare's neck. Moonlit smiles weakly, but her smile increases as another joins them through the same opening that you used.....
He is a strong stallion with coloring hinting akin to Sea Heart's. He looks to be one to have a temper, but the mares are not afraid of him. In fact, he nuzzles them very gently efore turning suspicious eyes on you. You quickely explain your presence as a simple wanderer, and Moonlit Sea backs you up, obviously knowing that that temper does exist and can show itself at any provocation. He moves toward you and you stand your ground, letting him snuffle at you until he moves back, smiling a small crooked smile. You relaz as he introduces himself good-naturedly. "I, wanderer, am Blood's Puzzle, stallion of the Knoll. You've already met my mate, Moon, and my half-sister, Heart. I welcome you." He bows and you step back for a bit watching their interactions as he speaks to the mares about his day. Seems he's just come from the Copses, visiting with some of the Rejuvinators working in the Island's Burn Zone. The work seems to be going well, and he is very pleased.
You speak with them and they tell you of distant plans for a Tarsuinn, or Herd, of their own, before bidding you a fond farewell, wishing you luck poetically and nuzzling your shoulder before they each trot off to munch at the long grasses at the edges of the plots of blue flowers. Contented, if still slightly mystifed by Moon's tale, you leave them in peace. A small sound is heard from the base of a hedge, almost too tiny a noise to even pick up. You could move to investigate, or ignore the sound, returning to the Leanser Knoll instead.
