WITH LORELEI, JAN '03
WELCOME TO DIAMOND STYX!

This is my website about my favorite band, Styx! I was almost 14 in the summer of 1975. I distinctly remember a day in my bedroom, listening to the radio. Lorelei came on, and I had heard it before, loved it, and wanted to know who performed it. I waited for the DJ to name the band after the song ended, but he didn't (Don't you just hate that?). So, I ran downstairs to the living room, snatched the Entertainment section out of the weekend newspaper, and ran back upstairs. I was looking for JB-105's Top Forty list for that week. Got it! Okay...Lorelei...STYX! Oh, cool! Is that the river Styx, from Greek mythology? We had just studied that last year (8th grade), and I loved all that stuff: Hades, Persephone, Odysseus, Lethe (the river of forgetfulness), Phlegethon (the river of fire), and Styx, "the river of the unbreakable oath, by which the gods swore" (said my book by somebody or other, which is around here somewhere!). Oh, yes, I loved all that stuff. Loved all those monsters! You've probably seen some of those myths made into movies shown on cable. There's the story of Perseus, who flies on Pegasus to save the princess from Poseidon's horrible creature, the Kraaken. Ray Harryhausen did the stop motion animation on that film. Great stuff, especially since it came out before computers could do the special effects.

But back to Styx! TOMMY SHAW: what a soul! What a good guy! I didn't develop the crush on him. Actually, I loved LOOKING at Andy Gibb, and LISTENING to Styx! Can you imagine Andy Gibb singing with Styx, or Styx singing an Andy Gibb song? Naaww, me neither. They don't really mix. Still, I have always gravitated toward Tommy, so when he left Styx in '83, I got depressed! I mean, dee-pressed! I knew about Girls With Guns and bought a copy. But I somehow missed the releases of What If and Ambition. Good grief! Where was I? And I thought Tommy hadn't done anything since Girls With Guns, and wondered where he was! Was he okay? Is he at the airport selling pencils? When I found out about Damn Yankees, I had mixed emotions. Tommy the vegetarian with TED NUGENT? I couldn't see it. But Damn Yankees and Don't Tread are a couple of my favorite CDs. My ULTIMATE favorite TS CD, however, is what came after and because of his work with Ted, Jack, and Michael: Shaw-Blades' Hallucination. I'll NEVER get sick of that CD! Jack, Tommy, you guys need to put out a second Shaw-Blades album!!

It's now Feb 2003, and I recently bought a copy of Cyclorama. How GREAT to hear some new studio tunes! DDY is gone, which is odd, since I've been hearing that voice since 1975, yet I can't say that it upsets me. Life goes on. I wish him well. Instead, we have LARRY singing! And GLEN, too! Shucks, guys, folks thought it was unusual when you had 3 vocalists; well, now you've got 4! And Larry sounds a LOT like the fabulous Chris De Burgh , who I remember for "Don't Pay The Ferryman" (the Tom Baker Video Debacle), "The Lady In Red", "In A Country Churchyard", "Every Drop of Rain", and "Patricia The Stripper"!! So, I LOVE LARRY's De Burghian voice. How cool!

I'm mystified about the Cyclorama carrot theme! I've missed some carrot reference somewhere, I guess. Hmmm...Tommy's a vegetarian...be the carrot, Tommy; BE THE CARROT!

NOVEMBER, 2004:

Today's the start of the CRUISE with REO, Journey, and Styx! How cool! I wish I could be there. I hope they'll schedule another one next year, and that I can go!

There's been a change of personnel. The lovely and enchanting Ricky Phillips has replaced Glen Burtnik as the Stygian bassist (Chuck makes guest appearances, but Ricky is the full timer). You would know Ricky from The Babys ("Isn't It Time") and Bad English ("When I See You Smi-i-i-ile"). Welcome, Ricky!

My most recent crusades are the formation of a Newsgroup for Styx Styx UP (Styx Usenet Project), and Styx Meetup Group No 58, which is a LOCAL club for Stygians to meet in person. Meet Up is a COOL website, with great ideas! I have dug around a lot over there, and there are 58 Styx Meetup Groups in all, with a total of 73 members. The largest group (New York) has 5 members. So, I have started a webring for all the Styx Meetup Groups. I've also discovered (thanks to Meet Up) Craigs List to advertise it. Here's hoping! I'd love to meet some local Stygians!
