Milan in pole position, claims Buffon
Football Italia
Milan have the slight advantage in the title race, concedes Juventus No 1 Gianluigi Buffon. Both sides are currently joint top of the table but the goalkeeper insists the Rossoneri have the edge.
"Milan beat Inter last week while we still have to face the Nerazzurri," stated the Italian. "Now they have a 51 per cent chance of the Scudetto, while we have 49 per cent. However, we have the possibility to level it up again if we win at Roma because Milan still have to travel to the Olimpico."
The Turin giants face their great capital rivals on Saturday night and Buffon is expecting a real test.
"It will also be up to me and not just our attackers to make a difference," continued the former Parma ace. "Roma are a very tough side to face, especially as they have the attacking trio of Francesco Totti, Antonio Cassano and Vincenzo Montella."
February was a tough month for Juventus after they surrendered an eight-point lead, but Buffon has rubbished reports of unrest within the Bianconeri squad. "I have read many false things about this team," said the 27-year-old. "The reality is that we feel good and are united."
There were allegations which suggested that boss Fabio Capello had clashed with both Alex Del Piero and Buffon last month. The club subsequently categorically denied those claims.
Juventus next for Kuffour?
Football Italia
Samuel Kuffour is expected to quit Bayern Munich in the summer for Italian giants Juventus. The Ghana stopper has failed to agree terms over a new contract and he’ll leave the German club for free at the end of the season.
The central defender, who is set to be handed European citizenship in the next month, would be welcomed by Fabio Capello. The Juventus boss is a known fan of the international after he attempted to sign him while in charge of Roma.
Reports suggest that Juventus have already started negotiations with agent Fabio Parisi over a move. The Delle Alpi outfit are keen to rejuvenate their central defensive options for the new campaign, due to the lack of cover for Lilian Thuram and Fabio Cannavaro.
Juve presently only have Paolo Montero and Ciro Ferrara at the club as possible alternatives, following the January departures of Nicola Legrottaglie, Mark Iuliano and Igor Tudor. Given that Montero is widely considered as past his best, and that Ferrara will retire in the summer, the club need some new faces.
Inter were also keen on Kuffour but they now seem to be concentrating on Benfica’s Luisao and Vincent Kompany of Anderlecht.
Sampdoria to ask for Nonda, Zalayeta in Juventus Diana deal
Tribal Football
Sampdoria director general Beppe Marotta is in talks with Juventus over their interest in midfielder Aimo Diana. Juve coach Fabio Capello is keen to bring Diana to Turin next season and has instructed chief Luciano Moggi to approach Samp about the midfielder's availability.
Marotta is ready to take advantage of his good relationship with Juve directors by negotiating a potential swap deal involving striker Marcelo Zalayeta for Diana. The Samp supremo is also interested in AS Monaco striker Shabani Nonda, who is joining Juve on a Bosman in June.
Juve Close To Bilbao’s Iraola
Goal.com
The Spanish defender can play as a right back or central defender. Juventus are very close to sign Atlethic Bilbao’s Andoni Iraola whose contract with the Basque club expires in June 2006.
Bilbao want to sell the player this summer so not to risk losing him on a free transfer next year. Iraola is considered as one of the best Spanish right-backs as Luis Aragones sees him as an integral part of his national side.
Roma's Dacourt welcomes Juventus interest
Tribal Football
AS Roma midfielder Ollie Dacourt says he could move to Juventus to continue his career. The French international has been linked with Juventus and Barcelona and said: "I have a contract with Roma, but one never knows and I am not sure that I will remain.
"To go to Juventus? I have not ever thought about it, but if they make a big offer perhaps I would go. They're a great club which has won a lot."
Lippi Warns Juve
Goal.com
The Italian national team coach advised his former squad to watch out from Roma when the Bianconeri travel to the Olimpico on Saturday night for the Serie A clash.
According to Marcello Lippi, this will be a very difficult game for Juventus, whose last visit to Roma resulted in a 4-1 thrashing when the Azzurri coach was still in charge of the ‘Old Lady’.
“A year ago I conceded four goals plus Francesco’s (Totti) gesture. Then I joked about it with him. The Olimpico is a stadium where everyone risks conceding many goals.”
Lippi also revealed he was once close to a Lazio move but then opted for an unsuccessful Inter adventure. “I’m not anti-Romanista. I was close to a move to Lazio but then unfortunately I chose Inter.”

Roma - Juventus
Football Italia
Juventus’ trip to Roma has been one of the most eagerly anticipated fixtures of the season after last summer’s dramatic events. A great rivalry already existed between the two clubs before Fabio Capello, Emerson and Jonathan Zebina all headed to Turin.
All three are expected to get a hot reception from the Stadio Olimpico faithful in a game that has the potential to explode both on and off the pitch. While few in the capital were sad to see Zebina leave, the departures of Capello and Emerson were hard for the Giallorossi tifosi to digest.
The club wanted to sell the Brazilian to Real Madrid but he insisted that he be allowed to join Juve. While Capello shocked the footballing world when he joined the club’s great rivals just months after stating that he would never sign for the Bianconeri.
Roma captain Francesco Totti, who returns from suspension, will be particularly keen to win this game given his war of words with Capello since the latter left. The two men have exchanged ‘insults’ which will undoubtedly add spice to this classic of the Italian game.
The home side go into the match having lost two of their last three games. They were defeated at Palermo in the last round that has complicated their plans of finishing in the top four. Chivu and Tommasi remain sidelined with injury, while Mexes is suspended.
Juventus too will be desperate for victory though. Anything less could result in Milan taking control of the title race. The 3-0 win over Siena, thanks to an inspired Alex Del Piero, helped them get back on track after dropping points against Sampdoria, Palermo and Messina. Pavel Nedved is still out though after he was knocked unconscious in the 1-0 Champions’ League loss at Real Madrid. But David Trezeguet will be available for selection after recovering from illness.
Roma (probable): Pelizzoli; Panucci, Dellas, Ferrari, Cufre; Perrotta, Dacourt, De Rossi; Totti, Montella, Cassano
Juventus (probable): Buffon; Zebina, Thuram, Cannavaro, Zambrotta; Camoranesi, Blasi, Emerson, Olivera; Del Piero, Ibrahimovic

Trezeguet available for Roma
Football Italia
David Trezeguet has recovered from illness and will start on the bench for Juventus at Roma this weekend. The Frenchman has missed the club’s last three games but he’s expected to return at the Stadio Olimpico. Trezeguet resumed full training on Tuesday and impressed during an 11-a-side practice game. The former Monaco player scored in the match, after controlling the ball with his chest before unleashing a left-foot volley into the top corner. Some whispers suggest that Trez could start the Giallorossi fixture but it seems much more likely that he will be used as a substitute.
Trezeguet, who has netted just once since his January return from shoulder surgery, could instead feature heavily in the Champions’ League next week. Juventus will entertain Real Madrid at the Stadio Delle Alpi in an effort to overturn the 1-0 first leg loss.
Ibra pinpoints Cassano danger
Football Italia
Zlatan Ibrahimovic believes that Juventus can beat Roma on Saturday if they stop Antonio Cassano."It will be a tough game for us because they have a squad with excellent potential," he told the Gazzetta dello Sport. "They play some good football and have a world class player like Francesco Totti. But their secret weapon is Cassano.
"He is an individual who can make the difference in a game."
The Turin giants, joint top of the table with Milan, are about to start perhaps the most crucial part of their season, with the trip to Rome being followed up with the return against Real Madrid. "They are two decisive games but we just need to think about one match at a time," added the Swede.
Juventus certainly face a difficult task to reach the last eight of the Champions’ League, after losing 1-0 at Real in the first leg. Yet Ibrahimovic, an £11.5m summer signing from Ajax, is confident that the Bianconeri can turn things around.
"We have more than a 50 per cent chance of going through," he insisted. "They are a dangerous team but I think we can recover, even if Pavel Nedved will probably not be back."
The Czech ace will miss the game but the Old Lady of Italian football will be able to count on the rediscovered Alex Del Piero. "I think he’s played well this season," argued Ibrahimovic. "He was criticised because he wasn’t scoring initially but he’s always been a key figure."
Del Piero seems to be getting back to his best after some excellent displays in games against Messina and, more notably, against Siena on Sunday.
Zebina unfazed by Roma return
Football Italia
Juventus defender Jonathan Zebina insists the hostile Olimpico crowd won’t affect his performance against former club Roma on Saturday.Zebina is expected to receive a hot reception from the Giallorossi faithful, after he quit the capital club for their great rivals in the summer. But the Frenchman believes that he – plus fellow ‘traitors’ Emerson and Fabio Capello – will be able to handle the pressure.
"We expect to receive a few whistles but we are professionals and nothing will be able to affect our performances," he stated. "This isn’t exactly a normal week for me and I admit that I’ll be a little more nervous than usual.
"I spent four years in Rome and I have many happy memories. I enjoyed some exceptional times there and they are still in my mind. I admittedly also had a few difficult moments but that all helped me to mature."
Zebina was often heavily criticised by some sections of the Roma fans, leading to the general feeling that he was happy to have ended his relationship with the outfit. "I never said that I wasted four years at Roma. I simply stated that playing for Juve made it easier for me to win international recognition," he added.
The former Cagliari stopper, who left Roma on a free transfer once his contract expired, is also confident that his side can come away with the three points.
"We are all in good shape and playing against Roma will give us a boost on the eve of the Real Madrid Champions’ League tie," he noted. "The squad is calm about the game because at the end of the day that is all it is. I don’t think it will be nasty out there.
"Our trident attack could be our main weapon," he added. "If we can find the right balance then it becomes easier for the team to play. After all, the best form of defence is attack."
Capello could field a 4-3-3 system, with Alex Del Piero supporting both Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Marcelo Zalayeta in attack. David Trezeguet is expected to start on the bench after missing the last three games with illness.
Juventus, Roma players admit "tension" getting to them
Tribal Football
Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon admits there is "too much tension" surrounding the looming weekend's clash with AS Roma.
The Italy No1 said: "There is too much tension around this game. Roma are exaggerating its importance. Its like a final, but you can wear yourself out just waiting for the game to come."
Roma midfielder Simone Perrotta said: "This game feels more like a derby. The tension around it is a concern. It's not what you want to worry about when you enter the field."
Juve chasing Atletico youngster
Football Italia
Juventus are reportedly not giving up the chase to sign Spanish starlet Pablo Ibanez from Atletico Madrid. The 20-year-old stopper has caught the eye of the Bianconeri and contact between the two clubs has allegedly already been made. However, the Liga outfit are understood to have informed the Italian giants that Ibanez is not for sale. The Madrid outfit are predicting a great future for the defender after recently extending his contract until 2009.
Juventus are believed to have offered Atletico a player plus cash deal, with Stephen Appiah part of the proposed bid. The Ghanaian midfielder, who has also recently been linked with Fiorentina and Everton, is tied to Juve until 2008.
He joined the Turin boys from Brescia in the summer of 2003, but has lost his place in the side after the arrival of Fabio Capello as boss.
Giraudo Confident About Juve’s Future
Goal.com
Antonio Giraudo spoke about the future of Juventus, both on and off the field. “In the next two years, Juventus will do well from all points of view,” stated the Bianconeri Administrator.“The squad is competitive and the balance will improve.”
Juventus has a difficult week ahead of them as on Saturday they will travel to the Olimpico to face eternal rivals Roma while on Wednesday the ‘Old Lady’ will host Real Madrid in a do-or-die match.
Moggi Jr fancies Roma job to "defy Dad!"
Tribal Football
FIFA agent Alessandro Moggi has admitted he fancies the director general's job at AS Roma - so he can tackle his Dad, Luciano, at Juventus! Moggi Jr has been linked with the top job at Roma, with Franco Baldini coming out of contract at the end of this season and unlikely to stay on.
He said: "I would consider joining a great club like Roma. It would appeal to me to defy my father! Who would I take with me to Roma from Juventus? Gianluca Zambrotta."

Del Piero eyes double victory
Football Italia
Juventus’ next two games could make or break their season, says captain Alessandro Del Piero. The leaders travel to Roma on Saturday, before trying to overturn a 1-0 first leg loss to Real Madrid in the Champions’ League."These two games will be key," said the No 10. "We need to confirm ourselves against both Roma and Real."
The Bianconeri had started to struggle of late after dropping points against Sampdoria, Palermo and Messina. But they got back to winning ways on Sunday when Del Piero inspired his side to a 3-0 win over Siena.
"That victory has increased our morale ahead of such a delicate and decisive period for us," said Alex, following his two strikes at the Stadio Delle Alpi. "I’m happy with my goals but also for the win. We really needed the three points and a positive display."
Juventus contact agent of Bayern Munich's Kuffour
Tribal Football
Juventus have contacted the Italian agent of Bayern Munich defender Sammy Kuffour. Juve director general Luciano Moggi admitted on Sunday that they're likely to focus their attentions on the Bosman market over the summer after heavy spending last year.
Kuffour will leave Bayern at the end of this season when his contract expires and is interested in a return to Turin. His agent, Fabio Paris, said: "At the moment we haven't received anything concrete from any clubs. But we know there are many that are interested.
"Newcastle has been mentioned and Samuel would happily play in the Premiership. But he also rates the Italian league very highly."
Along with Juve and Newcastle, Arsenal are also considering Ghana international Kuffour as manager Arsene Wenger seeks to stiffen his leaky defence.
Juventus chief: Finances may prevent deal for Roma's Cassano
Tribal Football
Juventus director general Luciano Moggi has again spoken of their interest in AS Roma striker Antonio Cassano. The Italy international is well inside the final 18 months of his current deal and shows no indication of agreeing terms over a new extension.
Moggi said yesterday: "Cassano is a champion, he is in the dreams of all clubs. We at Juve have our champions, the positioning of Cassano would not be easy. In order to sign him, then, everything would come down to finances."
Mavuba dreaming of Juventus
Football Italia
Bordeaux midfielder Rio Antonio Mavuba has revealed that Juventus would be his first-choice destination should he leave the Stade Chaban-Delmas. The recently-capped France international told FIFA magazine: "Juventus are the club of my dreams but I would not mind playing for Arsenal or Real Madrid either."I want to play abroad but not yet, I have a contract with Bordeaux until 2007, I've got time."
Mavuba only made his debut for Bordeaux in January of last year but his sensational form in Ligue 1 earned him a call up to the France squad in October. The 20-year-old, who started for Les Bleus in the 0-0 draw with the Republic of Ireland, was voted player of the tournament when France won the Under-20 crown in Toulon last summer.
"After the tournament in Toulon and Raymond Domenech's appointment as national Coach, I thought things could move quickly - but I never thought it would be this quick," he added.
Mavuba, whose father played for Zaire in the 1974 World Cup, was born on a boat in the Atlantic after his parents fled the civil war in Angola.
Chivu could quit Roma
Football Italia
Cristian Chivu has admitted that he’s unsure whether he will still be playing for Roma next season. Juventus, Milan, Inter and Real Madrid are believed to be monitoring his situation and the stopper could be tempted to leave the Eternal City."My future depends on the project here, a project that I am yet to be informed of," he told Tuttosport. "Nobody can promise anything in this world because this game is no longer simply a sport. A lot has changed here, we’ve had injuries and a host of suspensions to deal with this season.
"I am happy in this city but I don’t know what the future holds for me."
The former Ajax man, who was a revelation last season, has played just one game this term after having foot surgery twice. He recently returned to training but he’s still unlikely to be available for the visit of Juventus on Saturday night.
Meanwhile, the Turin giants are reportedly ready to make Roma an enticing bid for Antonio Cassano. His contract expires in 2006 and Juve will reportedly offer cash, plus Adrian Mutu and Shabani Nonda – a player who could arrive on a free transfer from Monaco in the summer.
Udinese's Jankulovski confirms AC Milan deal
Tribal Football
Udinese winger Marek Jankulovski has confirmed he is on his way to AC Milan next season. The Czech Republic international will double his money joining Milan, agreeing terms on a four-year contract worth £1 million-a-season.
Udinese accepted Milan's offer of £6.25 million at the end of February and Jankulovski confirmed the deal in an interview with the Czech press this week.
"I didn't choose AC Milan over Juventus," he insisted. "Juve were interested, but then everything went silent. I am very happy to be joining AC Milan. It is a dream to sign for one of the greatest clubs in the world."
Jankulovski rejected a move to CSKA Moscow in August and revealed: "The biggest offer I received was from CKSA, but my intention has always been to stay in Italy."
Collina loses World Cup dream
Football Italia
Even if Pierluigi Collina’s Serie A career is extended by a change in the rules, FIFA have warned he won’t be eligible for the 2006 World Cup.“If the FIGC wants to grant an extension so that Collina can continue to referee in Italy then we will not stand in their way,” said FIFA President Sepp Blatter. “Let it be made clear that this will only be valid for national competition.”
Collina will have reached the 45-year age limit by the time the tournament rolls around in Germany next summer. According to the current Italian rules, the world’s most famous referee would have to hang up his whistle this season, but considering his status and fitness levels, a change could be implemented to enable him to carry on.
Collina was also at the centre of attention this week as Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho announced he knew the Viareggio-based official would be chosen to take charge of the second leg of their Champions’ League tie against Barcelona.
“There's something which was said to me in London, that the referee will be Collina, the best in the world, independent, above all pressures. The perfect referee for his personality and quality,” said Mourinho.
UEFA insisted that no decision on the second leg referee had yet been made, but Mourinho continues to court controversy.

Juve welcome back Alex
Football Italia
Juventus boss Fabio Capello has embraced the return of Alessandro Del Piero after his stunning display against Siena. The captain was simply superb during the 3-0 win, netting a penalty and a sublime back-heel that broke the deadlock.
"Del Piero allows you to entertain and win," stated the tactician who had relegated the No 10 to the bench recently. "I don’t know whether leaving him out has fired him up to react in the way he has on the field.
"The truth is that Alex hasn’t been able to train properly for a long while now and that’s why he wasn’t at his best. He’s now returned to his standards and everyone can see that."
Del Piero, who has now scored eight times against Siena in six games, has had a difficult campaign to date but was quick to praise the team for his success.
"The win is the more important aspect," said the Italian international who was fielded in a trident attack. "Playing with three up-front does work and we could use it again in the future but we must be able to play in other ways too."
The latest ‘return’ of Del Piero also delighted director general Luciano Moggi who has often defended the player from criticism.
"I believe in champions and Alex is a champion," he proudly stated. "Del Piero is able to do what he did today and even more. I’ve always said that you must wait until the end of the season and see how many goals he scores."
Del Piero has netted nine in the championship so far this term, just one short of teammate Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
Alex the protagonist
Juventus.com
A masterful goal, like the one scored against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions' League final match, a penalty converted with determination, but most of all a substantial match, marked by classy touches, unexpected accelerations, in a few words Del Piero’s touch.
The Captain was the absolute protagonist of the win against Siena, he received the applauses from an enthusiastic Curva, toward which he went at the end of the match to greet his supporters. He said: “I think I’m in a good condition because my legs are rolling and it shows.
"My performance will probably be emphasized because of the two goals I scored, but I think I’ve played well before even without scoring. The trident attack? It’ alright for me, but I don’t think it is correct to say that this is the only pattern that can help us score goals.”
The return to scoring for Juventus’s Captain is an important sign in view of the forthcoming fundamental fixtures: “We must remind to ourselves that we are not the winners yet. It’s now the turn of AS Roma and the second leg match against Real Madrid, which are two fundamental matches of our season. And we cannot fail.”
Moggi: Juventus need more from Del Piero
Tribal Football
Juventus director general Luciano Moggi was one of the first club identities to praise Alessandro del Piero after the captain's brace against Siena on Sunday. However, Moggi did warn the returning attacker that more was expected of him, despite his impressive performance.
"The fact is I always expect Del Piero to play at a certain level," said Moggi. "Yesterday his performance was good, but I know Del Piero can play much better because he is a champion. What we saw from him was a player working through his bad form. His goals aren't important, its what he is showing in his overall game.
"We've missed Del Piero because of his injuries, but now is the moment in the season for the stronger players to make a difference."
Player of the Week: Del Piero (Juventus)
Football Italia
Those who question why Alessandro Del Piero is so highly rated have been given the answer they have been looking for. His performance in Week 26 against Siena verged on the awesome as the Juventus captain rediscovered his old touch by netting twice in the 3-0 victory.
Although there was nothing too difficult about the way he slotted home his penalty, his back-heeled goal was an illustration of his sublime, if admittedly underused, natural footballing talent. Even his harshest critics will have to concede that his display against the ‘other’ Bianconeri was something special.
There were already signs of Alex’s re-birth at Messina during the 0-0 draw in Week 25. Having been recently dropped to the bench, the No 10 was his side’s best player during a difficult game at the Stadio San Filippo. Yet after receiving praise for that display, criticism duly followed the Real Madrid defeat after Alex, along with the majority of his teammates, failed to shine.
The big question now is can Del Piero uphold the kind of form that destroyed Siena for a sustained period? After all, he netted two against the same Tuscan minnows in the first half of the season, which also led to adulation that the ‘old’ Alex had finally returned. A muscle strain and some infuriatingly inconsistent displays only followed.
Juventus could certainly do with the Italian international at his very best right now. It is no secret that their squad is nowhere near as packed with the quality of the Milan one, or possibly even Inter’s array of players. After all, had boss Fabio Capello not been without Pavel Nedved for the last month, then we possibly would not have seen Juve fielded with a trident attack against both Udinese and Siena.
Del Piero now has a massive opportunity to finally prove that he’s not finished on the big stage. The club face Roma and Real Madrid next, two games that must be won if the outfit are too keep alive their hopes of a Scudetto and Champions’ League double.
With David Trezeguet having scored just once since his return from injury and recently suffering with illness, Del Piero has made it tough for Capello to again drop him from the side in favour of the Frenchman.
Alex certainly won’t be lacking from any motivation. He’s firstly had to endure the humiliation of continually being substituted by Capello. The Coach then dropped him to the bench for a number of games which raised doubts over the player’s long-term future in Turin. Rumours of a summer exit simply gathered pace after the club signed Adrian Mutu, a possible direct replacement or a transfer pawn to offer Roma for Antonio Cassano – the new Golden Boy of Italian football, a tag which once belonged to the former Padova youngster.
This has undoubtedly been the player’s most difficult season in Turin since he returned from a career-threatening knee injury in the summer of 1999. But Del Piero has taken the flack he’s received with the dignity and the professionalism that few men in his position would have shown. He knows what he can offer Juventus and he’s now finally showing it.
Emerson’s comment
Juventus.com
“Winning was important, especially after playing such a good match. We played with determination, we managed to score three goals, with a good ball possession and creating many occasions. Well, we have to follow this path.”
Emerson is satisfied with the good performance against Siena. “El Puma” scored with a powerful header and won a penalty that allowed Del Piero to score the third goal.
“Scoring is always pleasant but what is important is that my goal helped the team win. The penalty? I was held down and could not hit the ball with my head. Collina was good enough to see that”.
The win over Siena launched Juventus back to the top of the table, waiting for the derby in Milan. He underlined: “I won’t be watching the match tonight. No matter how it ends. It’s us who have to keep going on this way and try to gain three more points next Saturday in the match against Roma”.
Nedved released from hospital
Football Italia
Juventus’ Pavel Nedved has been released from hospital - but there are unconfirmed reports that he could still be out of action until April. The Czech ace was admitted to a Turin clinic for observation, after being knocked unconscious in Tuesday’s Champions’ League loss at Real Madrid.
Although tests have ruled out any complications to the accidental clash of heads, Nedved has been told that he will need complete rest for the next seven days. That has definitely ruled him out of the big match at Roma on Saturday but his comeback could be still some way off.
Sources close to the Stadio Delle Alpi outfit claim that Nedved, who will undergo a further examination next Tuesday, won’t be rushed back into action. There are even some stories which claim that the midfielder will not return until the April 3 clash at Fiorentina.
That would be a massive blow for boss Fabio Capello given his difficulty in replacing Nedved on the left side of midfield.
Meanwhile, David Trezeguet has recovered from illness and will be available for the Giallorossi fixture. The Frenchman has missed the last two games with a fever but trained this morning with no problems. He may partner Alessandro Del Piero in attack at the Stadio Olimpico, allowing Capello to rest a tired looking Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
Juve’s Cassano bid in doubt
Football Italia
Transfer guru Luciano Moggi has cooled speculation that Juventus will make a summer bid for Antonio Cassano. The Roma ace, whose contract expires in 2006, has been heavily linked with the Bianconeri but Moggi isn’t giving too much away.
"He is a player who can occupy the dreams of all clubs, he’s a champion," Moggi told Radio Anch’Io Sport on Monday. "However, you need economical power to sign him and you must also take into account that we already have great attacking players at this club.
"Juventus are not a side who buy players to increase the size of their squad, we buy individuals to play."
Moggi and Co will get a close look at Cassano next week when the joint leaders travel to the Stadio Olimpico. It promises to be a tense affair after boss Fabio Capello, Emerson and Jonathan Zebina all left the capital for Turin in the summer.
"I don’t think there will be any problems outside of the game," explained Moggi. "The good relationship between the two clubs has helped to calm matters. Roma are on a par with the top teams. It will be difficult as they have players who can change the game in an instant but we will go there to play our own way."
Moggi added that Pavel Nedved is likely to miss the tie after his head injury, but the Old Lady can rely on the ‘old’ Alex Del Piero.
"It is common for people to criticise him when he plays badly," stated Moggi following Alex’s sublime display against Siena yesterday. "Nobody takes into consideration the injuries he’s suffered. He will continue to demonstrate that he is a champion."
Juventus star Emerson: I can handle Roma return
Tribal Football
Juventus midfielder Emerson insists he has no fears returning to former club AS Roma on the weekend. It will be the Brazilian's first appearance back at his old stomping ground since his controversial departure last summer.
"I am calm about the game and when I go onto the field, my only objective is to play," said Emerson. "The boos from my former tifosi will not affect me. It is simply part of football."
Udinese's Muntari: I want Juventus move
Tribal Football
Udinese youngster Sulley Muntari has declared he wants to play for Juventus. The attacking prospect scored against Fiorentina in Saturday's 2-2 draw and admitted last night: "I confess that I want to play for a great team. The greatest would be to wear the shirt of Juve.
"The Bianconera leadership has been watching me? I do not know if that is true, but I would be very satisfied if it was. My focus now is with Udinese; there is a Champions League place to conquer, we will fight until the end."
Jankulovski invites Milan bid
Football Italia
Udinese’s Marek Jankulovski has told Milan that he is ready to join them at the end of the season. The Czech ace has been strongly linked with the Rossoneri and he’s hopeful that a transfer can be completed.
"The Milan interest is no longer a rumour," he told Pravo. "It wasn't speculation about Juventus or Inter either, it was just that no deals were agreed between the clubs. Playing for Milan would be the fulfilment of a childhood dream. It's a really giant club. One of the world's biggest."
Jankulovski is one of the most wanted players on show in Serie A after a few stunning seasons at the Stadio Friuli. He was expected to be sold last summer but proposed moves to Juventus and Inter failed to materialise. CSKA Moscow then agreed a fee with Udinese, only for the international to reject a switch to Russia.
"I’ve had some offers from abroad but my family is really happy here in Italy," Jankulovski continued. "I don’t see any reason to leave the peninsula but I would certainly happily consider joining a new club."
Palermo bid £1.5M for Steaua Bucharest's Radoi
Tribal Football
Palermo have tabled an offer for Steaua Bucharest centre-half Mirel Radoi. The 23 year-old has been recommended to Palermo by Steaua's Italian coach Walter Zenga and is likely to move to the Serie A club in the summer for £1.5 million.
Zenga has also spoken with Inter Milan about the defender and their president, Giacinto Facchetti, watched Radoi in action earlier this season against Parma in the UEFA Cup. A deal has been mooted where Inter will secure first refusal on Radoi from Palermo once the Romania international moves to Italy in June.
Zidane may miss Juve return
Football Italia
Real Madrid ace Zinedine Zidane may be unavailable for the Champions’ League trip to Juventus next week. The former Bianconeri favourite picked up a slight injury at the weekend, which could rule him out of the March 9 clash.
The classy playmaker limped out of Real’s 2-0 defeat to Deportivo with a left thigh muscle strain. Zidane could now be sidelined for anything between six and ten days according to reports today.
There may be further good news for Juventus given that key man Raul is also struggling with fitness. The Spanish international will miss Wednesday’s Liga clash against Betis, but the Madrid outfit are confident that he will soon return to first team action.
Real travel to Turin looking to book themselves a place in the last eight, after winning at the Benabeu 1-0 last Tuesday.

Capello on the attack
Football Italia
Juve’s recent problems have stemmed from a lack of goals and Fabio Capello concedes he could use the trident attack against Siena.
“I have a few options in my mind and the trident worked well against Udinese,” he said of their 2-1 win. “I will wait until the last minute to make a decision.”
Marcelo Zalayeta could step in with David Trezeguet and Pavel Nedved still sidelined, while Zlatan Ibrahimovic may be rested so that he won’t risk suspension for next week’s clash with Roma.
“I don’t believe in resting players who are on yellow cards,” insisted the Coach. “It is too risky to keep him out and Zlatan has only been unlucky of late.”
Nedved clashed heads with Raul Bravo on Tuesday evening and he has been held in a Turin clinic for observation ever since. The club has confirmed he’ll stay on until Monday, possibly more, and Capello’s comments only fuelled speculation as to his condition.
“I won’t talk about Pavel without the player’s permission,” he said during a Press conference. “As for Trezeguet, he is improving after a bout of flu and should resume full training on Monday.”
Over the last month the side has gone from the seemingly invincible to extremely disappointing, as Juve have lost an eight-point lead in the Serie A table and were defeated 1-0 in the Champions’ League on Tuesday.
“I sincerely doubt we are in a crisis,” he assured. “All we are missing are a few goals, but we do create the scoring opportunities and that’s the important thing. I think we played well in Madrid and have just been unlucky of late.”
On paper this weekend is all set to go in the Bianconeri’s favour, as they welcome relegation battlers Siena while joint leaders Milan take on Inter.
“Siena are not to be underestimated and are undefeated in seven games,” warned Capello. “They are in good condition, both physically and psychologically, but we are ready to fight back with the grit and determination we’ve shown so far this season.”
Juventus 3 - 0 Siena
Football Italia

Alessandro Del Piero bagged a brace - including one of the best goals of his career - to put Juve back on track. The Bianconeri had squandered an eight-point lead over the last month, picking up just four points from their last four games.
Fabio Capello revived the trident attack with Marcelo Zalayeta, Alessandro Del Piero and Zlatan Ibrahimovic starting upfront. David Trezeguet was still out with flu and Pavel Nedved remains hospitalised after a clash of heads with Raul Bravo during their 1-0 defeat at Real Madrid midweek.
Siena were also confident following their first win under Gigi De Canio, beating local rivals Fiorentina to pull them to the brink of safety. Left-back Giovanni Pasquale was suspended for the visitors, while Igor Tudor returned to face the club that still owns his contract.
Timid penalty appeals were waved away after two minutes when Gianluca Zambrotta fell under Alberto's challenge, while long-range efforts from Manuele Blasi and Zambrotta whistled past the post.
Siena also proved dangerous with Rodrigo Taddei holding up the ball for Tore Andre Flo's angled drive, then the Brazilian went for goal himself with a low shot that was well smothered by Gigi Buffon.
Alessandro Del Piero impressed and curled a free kick past the post, but Enrico Chiesa wasted a golden opportunity when Lilian Thuram clattered into Jonathan Zebina.

Del Piero looked noticably more confident and scored a spectacular goal after 35 minutes. Marcelo Zalayeta skipped past Colonnese and rolled the ball across the face of goal for the Juve captain to flick it in with his heel from six yards. It was one of the best goals of his long career and just what Pinturicchio - and Juve - needed.
Ibrahimovic drilled wide from the edge of the box, but on the stroke of half-time Juve really should have made it 2-0 when the Siena defence was caught unawares by a deflected Zalayeta cross and Del Piero pounced only to be denied by a desperate Alex Manninger save.

Emerson doubled their lead at the start of the second half. Mauro Camoranesi's corner kick found the Brazilian for a powerful header that Manninger couldn't keep out. The trident was passing the ball around beautifully and Ibrahimovic exchanged passes with Zebina until Colonnese flung himself at Del Piero's finish.
There was a scare for Siena soon after, as Alex Manninger rushed out to close down Ibrahimovic and was accidentally kicked in the head, but the former Arsenal and Fiorentina goalkeeper was able to continue after treatment.
Chiesa sprung the offside trap and threatened to get Siena back into the game, but Fabio Cannavaro recovered to clear the danger. Referee Pierluigi Collina pointed to the spot for a Taddei push on Emerson as they waited for a corner kick to come in and Del Piero stepped up to convert the penalty for his second of the game.
There were final spot-kick appeals for Cannavaro's challenge on Flo, but it ends 3-0 for Juventus.

Post-Match Comments
Fabio Capello: “I had already seen a good Juve performance in Madrid and we are now confident of our own potential again. I always knew we’d recover from that moment of nervousness and the side played with determination and moved the ball around much faster. We’ll see if the trident can be used in the big games as well, as everything is possible if the players are willing to work hard for 90 minutes.”
Capello is satisfied
Juventus.com
Fabio Capello is satisfied with his squad’s performance which caused them to win neatly over Siena. After the match, this was his comment: “I said I had seen the team in a very good condition in the last few days. They trained with concentration and determination and played the same way today.
“There finally has been a faster game pace.”
He was asked about the trident attack: “It can be surely repeated, it will depend on each match and on the opponents to meet. If it is like today, with the three strikers able to step back , it works”.
Eventually, he was asked about Del Piero’s excellent performance: “He wasn’t himself a few months ago and I said he would thank me later. He is himself now, he pleases us and makes us win.”
Juventus make late move for Lazio's Giannichedda
Tribal Football
Juventus have made a late move for Lazio winger Giuliano Giannichedda. The experienced left-sided midfielder is off contract in the summer and has so far stalled on agreeing terms over a new deal with Lazio.
Giannichedda is wanted for next season by Lazio president Claudio Lotito, but is among a shortlist of midfield targets for Juve director general Luciano Moggi, which also includes Cristian Ledesma (Lecce) and Mozart (Reggina).

Juventus v Siena: Preview
ESPN Soccernet
Failure is not an option for Juventus against Siena if they wish to maintain their push at the top of the Serie A standings. Fabio Capello's men are hoping to end a disappointing February on a high having squandered an eight-point lead over AC Milan and made an unimpressive return to their European challenge.
Tuesday's 1-0 Champions League defeat against Spanish giants Real Madrid marked Juve's third loss this month with the Bianconeri managing just one win in their last five games. And Juve's goalless draw at Messina last weekend allowed Scudetto contenders Milan to draw level with them on 54 points.
"It's really not what we had hoped for," admitted captain Alessandro Del Piero.
However, it is the goalscoring drought that is Juve's main concern ahead of the clash with Siena. For a team that is aiming to clinch both the Champions League and the Scudetto, one goal scored and four conceded in five games is unacceptable.
Their recent loss of form is even more apparent when looking at their results from the beginning of the campaign with the Turin outfit taking five victories in six games, netting 11 times and only giving one away.
"Clearly we have to score more," admitted Del Piero.
Things are not improving for the Bianconeri either with their top scorer David Trezeguet still out of action with flu and pivotal midfielder Pavel Nedved unable to play after suffering a head injury in Madrid.
The only consolation for Juventus remains the fact that rivals AC Milan face a bigger battle against unbeaten Internazionale and without their top scorer Andriy Shevchenko. A slip by Milan and a victory for Juve will be a breath of fresh air for Capello's men, who must brace themselves for a challenging two weeks ahead which will see them take on Roma and Real Madrid again.
It will be down to Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Del Piero to show their worth against a determined Siena with the attacking duo currently struggling to harmonise in front of goal.
Siena, meanwhile, have found their saviour in Norwegian striker Tore Andre Flo, who has been a key figure in their recent revival. For a team that looked to be heading straight to Serie B at the start of the year, things have taken a turn for the better for Gigi De Canio's men.
Siena travel to the Delle Alpi unbeaten in seven games and knowing that a positive result could see them finally leave the drop zone. Flo's crucial goal against Fiorentina in last weekend's Tuscan derby allowed his team to move to within a point of safety and the striker is hoping for more of the same against Juve.
"If we go on the pitch without the conviction of being able to get a positive result then we will be beaten from the start," said Flo. "Juve is a great team but we have not lost in seven games and we can take some points in Turin."
Siena will have to do without defender Giovanni Pasquale and the injured midfielder trio Andrea Ardito, Alfonso Camorani and Alin Stoica.
Nedved extends hospital stay
Football Italia
Concern is growing over Pavel Nedved’s condition after Juve confirmed he’d stay under observation until Monday at the very least.
The Czech midfielder was stretchered off after a clash of heads with Real Madrid’s Raul Bravo during their 1-0 defeat in Spain on Tuesday evening. He was knocked unconscious and had no memory of where he was, so doctors diagnosed head trauma and put him in a Turin clinic for observation from Wednesday morning.
“Pavel Nedved’s condition is improving,” read a Juventus statement released today, “but in order to continue the therapy and tests for the aftermath of this trauma, he will not leave the clinic until Monday at the earliest.”
Even Andriy Shevchenko, who fractured a cheekbone and required two titanium plates in his head, did not stay in hospital for such a long time, so this setback is raising questions over Nedved’s condition.
The 2003 Ballon d’Or winner is obviously not included in the squad to face Siena on Sunday – nor is flu-ridden hitman David Trezeguet – and both these players are now at serious risk for the big upcoming games.
Next weekend Juve travel to Roma’s Stadio Olimpico and will take on Real Madrid in the second leg of their Champions’ League tie on March 9.
Juventus squad: Buffon, Ferrara, Tacchinardi, Pessotto, Emerson, Ibrahimovic, Del Piero, Chimenti, Birindelli, Camoranesi, Appiah, Zambrotta, Blasi, Thuram, Kapo, Olivera, Zalayeta, Zebina, Cannavaro.

Trez illness sparks concern
Football Italia
David Trezeguet’s prolonged absence from the Juventus first team has sparked fears that the France striker could be suffering from glandular fever. The 27-year-old has missed Juventus’ last two matches through illness and has already been ruled out of Sunday’s clash with Siena.
Trezeguet, who was originally out with flu and has since been struck down by an intestinal virus, remains reluctant to comment on his health problems. He did, however, admit that he rates himself as doubtful for the Champions’ League second-leg clash with Real Madrid on March 9.
The former Monaco hitman, who has not been training with his Juventus teammates this week, had an initial blood test last Friday but confirmed on Wednesday that he would be having more tests next week.
His France and Juventus teammate, Jonathan Zebina, contracted glandular fever during his time at Roma and is now hoping that the same has not happened to Trezeguet.
"It’s the worst thing that can happen to a footballer," said the defender. "I had no strength at all. It only kept me out for a month but usually it lasts longer than that."
Olivier Kapo, another of Juventus’ French contingent, claims there is no need to be concerned about Trezeguet’s condition. "David just had a bad virus," said the midfielder. "But he’ll be fresh and ready to go again for the match against Roma in a week."
Glandular fever is brought on by severe viruses and can last for several months. It can also lead to long-term fatigue problems.
Juventus in Essien link
Football Italia
Juventus are pondering a summer bid for Lyon ace Michael Essien, according to reports in France. The ‘L’Equipe’ newspaper claims that Juventus Vice-president Roberto Bettega watched the midfielder in action against Monaco last week.
Essien, a 22-year-old Ghanaian, is a realistic target as the Old Lady are expected to sell both Alessio Tacchinardi and Stephan Appiah in the summer. Essien’s agent has also fuelled the rumours of a Turin switch even if he admitted that the Italian outfit had not been in touch.
"I know that Juventus are interested," stated Fabien Pivetau. "However, there has been no direct contact with them."
The current Serie A leaders are not the only ones keen on the player though, given that Manchester United, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Arsenal have all made enquiries.
Juventus offer Everton target Appiah to Atletico Madrid
Tribal Football
Juventus have offered midfielder Stephen Appiah to Atletico Madrid. Juve directors took advantage of their visit to Spain for this week's Champions League clash with Real Madrid to hold talks with Atletico over Ghana international Appiah.
The 20 year-old was offered to Atletico in part-exchange for defender Pablo Ibanez. However, the Spanish club insist Pablo is not for sale and would prefer to negotiate a stand-alone deal for Appiah. Everton and Fiorentina are also among clubs to be chasing the Ghanaian youngster, who has a contract with Juve until 2008.
Essien reveals Juventus, Man Utd, Real Madrid contact
Tribal Football
Olympique Lyon midfielder Mikael Essien has confirmed the interest of Juventus.
"I know that Juventus is interested in him, even if I have not yet had contact directly from Bianconeri representatives," said the Ghanaian. "Indeed, to the contrary I have had some contact with Manchester United, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Arsenal."
Lyon ace Essien is looming as one of the hottest properties for the summer market after an exceptional season both domestically and in Europe this term.
Barcelona president won't give up on Juventus' Tacchinardi
Tribal Football
Barcelona president Joan Laporta is still keen to bring Juventus midfielder Alessio Tacchinardi to the Nou Camp. Laporta tried unsuccessfully to sign Tacchinardi in January, with Juve's asking price proving too rich for Barca's budget for this season.
However, the Italy international remains a priority target for the Barca supremo, despite opposition from his No2, Sandro Rosell. Tacchinardi has made it clear to Barca intermediaries that he won't consider a loan switch to the Nou Camp and if he is to leave Juve, it will only be for a long-term, permanent deal.
Juve cling on to 'tainted' titles
Football Italia
Juventus have rejected calls to have their trophies between 1994 and ’98 revoked after the doping trial evidence was released. Earlier this year the Turin trial came to a close with chief of medical staff Dr Riccardo Agricola found guilty of administering substances, including EPO, while director Antonio Giraudo was cleared.
However, the reasoning behind the decision was only released this week with potentially damaging conclusions from the trial judges.
These include the belief that “substances were administered in order to fraudulently strengthen their performances and therefore influence the results in competition,” while some top stars were accused of “lying during their testimony.”
Now that the details have emerged, the FIGC and CONI’s anti-doping commission can begin to stage their own investigation that could potentially – though it is highly unlikely – see the trophies from 1994 to ’98 revoked.
“Nobody can take away what we won on the pitch,” assured Juventus director Roberto Bettega amid growing calls for an historic judgment. The player who came off worse in the judge’s summing up was Moreno Torricelli. “His version of events was created and his behaviour should be investigated further.”
This infuriated the former Juve star, who is now plying his trade with Serie B outfit Arezzo, and he pledged to defend his good name.
“This sentence offends me because I am not a liar,” insisted Torricelli. “I cannot understand why a judge would make such serious allegations and I know I did everything by the book. When they asked me about medication I took at Juve, it was going back four or five years and it wasn’t easy to remember everything accurately.
"I never took anything illegal and just had integrators because we played every three days.”
