Introduction
Bhaskar Rao (Sydney)

This issue is sponsored by Smt. Garre Lalitha and Sri Garre Badari of Maryland Heights, MO (USA). We gratefully acknowledge their generous contribution.

We are also happy to announce and thank Smt. Yalamanchali Uma (USA) for a generous donation for KathaPuraskaram awards in the next 4 issues of Patrika. Details will be published in the September 2002  issue.

In this issue there are some classic stories by Kalipatnam Rama Rao etc. Some of these stories were published before and reprinted here with the permission of the authors. We didn’t get a suitable original contribution for the KathaPuraskaram award. So, regrettably no award is made this time. As in the past Nidadavolu Malathi and D Chandrasekara Rao were very helpful in finalising the contents of this issue. Hope that you will enjoy this issue.

Many readers by now might have noted that several Telugu web pages are irritating with many distortions in their Telugu fonts, especially with the Internet Explorer. Except for a few commercial publishers’ pages (eg. Eenaadu, Computer Vignanam, Vaartha etc), the rest are irritating to read in spite of their rich content. Among the voluntary net publications, perhaps Patrika is the only publication without any distortions in the Telugu fonts. Naturally, we are proud of this. But we are also disappointed because, given the Telugus IT talent, it is a pity that we don’t have a decent and inexpensive Telugu software to make Telugu HTML files.

We have added now a Discussion Forum cum Bulletin Board. We request readers to make use of it to exchange information, views and other interests. Link to the Board is at the top of this page.

Katha-Puraskaram Awards

(Revised June 2002)

To encourage promising writers from India, we are now introducing small honorariums between Rs.250 to  Rs.500 for writers currently residing in India. Readers may be aware that many Telugu publications pay very little or no honorariums at all. Our scheme, Katha-Puraskaram, is similar to the well-known Katha-Peetham award in Rachana and is administered there by Vasundhara.

Katha-Puraskaram award is given only to original and hither to unpublished articles i.e., stories, essays or poems. We are glad to say that Vasundhara agreed to conduct the Katha-Puraskaram awards. Therefore your literary contributions should be sent directly to: Vasundhara, Katha Puraskarm, Quarter No. 515, R.R.L. Colony, Bhubaneswar-751 013, Orissa.

Patrika doesn't have any income. Therefore we appeal to our readers and well-wishers for donations to the Katha-Puraskaram awards. The minimum is Rs.750 (Rs.500 or Rs250 for one or two awards and the balance to meet our Indian transaction costs). In foreign currency this is about U$25 (U$18 + U$7 for bank charges) or A$35. These donations may be made, for example, in the name of a dear relative, friend, teacher etc. We will publish a photograph and a brief write up supplied by you on that person. We are also willing to publish the photographs of the donor and the recipient of the award.

Furthermore, if a donor supports Katha-Puraskaram in all the 4 issues in a year, with the permission of the authors we will supply the reformatted typeset material (PageMaker and PDF files) on a CD to encourage the donor to publish, at their expense, as a book or as CDs, of course dedicated to the nominated person. This is an exciting and a new opportunity to do something worthwhile to permanently preserve the memory of someone you love and respect. In general such publications are good for distribution among relatives and friends or as a donation to the local Telugu association to raise funds. The donation for this scheme is U$90 or A$165, including the cost of making the CD and its postage. We are grateful to Smt Yalamanchali Uma (USA)  for being the first of such sponsors. Finally one may donate for one Puraskaram award and sponsor an entire issue of Patrika for U$50 or A$75. The balance of the award will be used to partly meet our typesetting costs in India for that issue. We are grateful to Smt Garre Lalitha (USA)  for being the first of such sponsors.

The following supporters of Patrika have already offered donations:

Dr *Adusumilli Hanumayya (in memory of his late father-in-law Sri Veeramahaneni Lakshmi Narayana), Mr *John Lingutla, Mr Varigonda Subba Rao, Dr *Durvasula Murthy, Mr Kodur Ramamurthy (in memory of his late father) , Mr C. Viswanatham, Dr K. Hemachandara Rao, Dr P. Lakshminarayana (in memory of his mother), *Lalitha Garre (USA, in memory of her late father-in-law), *Uma Yalamanchali (USA, in memory of her father)) and a couple of anonymous persons.

If you wish to make a donation, please contact me: Bhaskar Rao.
