Andie Beth's Feminist Views
From the beginning of time, women have been mistreated, blamed for society's shortcomings, and controlled in various ways.  The following (paraphrased) quote I found will give you a good idea of why I consider myself a feminist.

Because woman's work is never done
and is underpaid or unpaid or boring or
repetitious and we're the first to get fired
and what we look like is more important
than what we do and if we get raped it's
our fault and if we get beaten we must have
provoked it and if we raise our voices we're
nagging bitches and if we enjoy sex we're
nymphos and if we don't we're frigid and if
we love women it's because we can't get a
"real" man and if we ask our doctor too many
questions we're neurotic and/or pushy and
if we expect childcare we're selfish and if we
stand up for our rights we're aggressive and
"unfeminine" and if we don't we're typical
weak females and if we want to get married
we're out to trap a man and if we don't we're
unnatural and because we still can't get an
adequate safe contraceptive but men can walk
on the moon and...for lots and lots of other
reasons...
I am part of the women's liberation
movement.

We all have our opinions.  We all want to share them.  Some of us, however, have to fight ridicule and hatred to get our voices heard.  Women are rarely taken seriously when they attempt to voice a position on an issue.  We're either seen as hormonal, bitchy, too ugly, too fat, too old, too young...too whatever to be considered.  Maybe if we all got in big crowds wearing skimpy lingerie or bikinis, men in power would take notice?  Maybe our husbands and boyfriends and male bosses would stop thinking of our feminist stances as annoying or just "cute" and actually pay attention when we talk about inequality at the workplace and in the home?  It shouldn't have to be that way.
The religious right (wrong)  has done a very good job of making sure that women are "kept in their place."  Take a look at the way fundamentalist preachers preach!  Adam and Eve.  "Of course, Adam did wrong, but if Eve had not been so coniving and deceptive, the event never would have happened."  That's their basic approach to that particular passage.  Bear in mind, however, that Eve had not yet been created (according to this very altered passage of the Bible) when Adam was given the command not to eat of the tree of knowledge of good and evil.  Perhaps if he'd done his job and instructed Eve on what NOT to do...but then isn't that how it always goes?  A man messes up and finds some way to pin it on a woman.  And all you mega religious people out there...don't e-mail me telling me that in Eve's conversation with the serpent that she knew about the command not to eat the fruit...because if you'll look in Genesis carefully, you will easily see how the story has been changed.  See...on the sixth day, God created man in his own image...MALE AND FEMALE!  AT THE SAME TIME!  That means that women are JUST AS IMPORTANT as men!  The story of Adam and Eve implies that Eve was created sometime later...maybe YEARS later.  And why is it that you NEVER hear a fundamentalist pastor preaching on the book of Esther?  I've been in church all my life and I have yet to hear a MAN speak on that topic.  I've heard it from women, but never from a man.  Could it be that it is because it portrays women as strong, powerful, beautiful, and able to accomplish great things?  Maybe so, since they consider a woman's place to be in the home, barefoot and pregnant.
Many issues are important to me in feminism.  Now, I don't go as far as the radical (NOW) feminists.  Abortion is their main topic.  I'm against abortion, so I am a pro-life feminist.  Pro-life isn't just about being against abortion, though.  I'm also against racism, homophobia, and the death penalty (in most cases).  So now that you know a bit more about my feminist positions on issues, please click on any of the links below to read about a topic that interests you.
