Chapter 4: Find the Spiritual Stone of Fire!
This chapter starts off with Zelda relating the story of the Goddesses and the Triforce.
Three bright lights streak through a cloudy sky....
In the distant, distant past, before all life, of course.... and even before the land and the sea, three great Goddesses came to the land of chaos that was Hyrule.
Din, Goddess of Power, with her strong arms of fire, ploughed the land and created the red earth.
Nayru, Goddess of Wisdom, poured her wisdom into the earth, and gave the world laws.
And the Goddess of Courage, Faroroe, gave birth to the life that would uphold the law, from her rich mind.
When they finished their mission, and returned to the heavens, they left behind the Triforce, a sacred golden triangle, and that place became the Sacred Realm.
To protect the Triforce, which, it is said, will grant the wish of anyone who touches it, from evil-minded people, the Ancient Sages built a Temple. And, with the "Door of Time," sealed the entrance hard.
'The person who gathers the three Spiritual Stones, stand here, and, with the Ocarina of Time, play the Song of Time. If you do this, you will be able to open the door.'
Zelda is still talking. She and Link are sitting on the steps in the courtyard.
This is the secret that has been passed from generation to generation by Hyrule's Royal Family. I, too, was told this by my mother.
Link: Is it really okay for you to be telling me these serious things, Zelda?
Zelda: Well, of course, I can't just tell anyone about this, or the Ocarina. But you believed what I told you. Even my father wouldn't believe me. So, I trust you, too. She smiles at Link.
Link looks a bit surprised, then embarrassed. He scratches his head, grinning kinda sheepishly.
Link: Well, I.... nothing.
Suddenly, Impa appears behind Link, making him jump quite a bit
Zelda: This Sheikah woman is Impa, my nurse. Impa, this is the messenger from the forest, that I saw in my dream.
Impa: I am Princess Zelda's guardian.... I saw you in the castle town yesterday. You fought with the bandits.... I saw that you are a courageous yound boy, fit to carry out anything the Princess asks.
Link looks surprised. Zelda is impressed.
Zelda: You see everywhere, and everything!
Link: By the way.... do you know where the other two Spiritual Stones are?
Impa: I don't know the whereabouts of the Spiritual Stone of Water, but I've heard that Darunia, the head of the Gorons, has the Stone of Fire.
Link: Okay then! He starts walking off.
Zelda: Link, wait!
Link: Don't worry! I'll make sure I find the stones for you before Ganondorf does.
Zelda: We can't let Ganondorf take this Ocarina.... I'll do my best. Be strong, Link!
Zelda kisses a wide-eyed Link on the cheek. He does the typical falling-over-thing-with-the-dopey-smile, and then sprints off.
Next, there's a picture of the Castle, with Zelda and Impa looking on as guards yell out from various places in the castle....
Guards: Hey!! Who's this guy?!
Catch that rascal!
Hey.... that pot was an heirloom!
Navi: Hey.... don't forget me! (frantically flying after Link)
Luckily, Impa steps in front of a pair of guards and picks up a very relieved looking Link by the back of his shirt.
Guards: Lady Impa!
Be careful!
Impa: I'll take him outside.
Impa carries Link over to a window, and holds him up over the edge. Link presumably thinks she actually means to throw him out the window.
Link: AAAAAAAAAH!
Impa holds Link up next to the window, pointing him towards Death Mountain.
Impa: That's the mountain where the Gorons live, Death Mountain.
Zelda and Link stand in front of a view of Hyrule Field.
Impa: We must protect this beautiful country of Hyrule. Link.... the peace of this country is depending on your courage.
Link jumps free of Impa's grasp, and out the window.
Link: Leave it up to me, obasan!!
'obasan' literally means something like 'aunty,' but also something like 'middle aged woman.' Impa looks none to happy to be called this
As Link sets out across Hyrule Field with Navi, Zelda watches from her window, and Impa looks down at them, smiling.
Link: Let's go, Navi.... to Death Mountain!!
Navi: OK! (it actually has "OK!" written in English... the Japanese seem to think that English is cool, or something )
Link walks across Hyrule Field, humming.
Navi: What do you think Saria would say if we told her we were going to protect Hyrule?
Link looks dazed.
Link: Huh? ...what did you say?
Navi hits him on the head, complete with angry + mark and puffs of steam.
Navi: Hey, get that stuff about Zelda out of your stupid head! Have you forgotten about Saria?!
Link: N-no, of course not!
Link looks down at the Ocarina in his hands.
Link (thinking): Saria.
As Link walks along playing the Ocarina, there are pictures of Saria, Mido, and other Kokiri.
Saria: Play this sometimes, and think about the Forest.
Link (thinking): I wonder what everyone is doing in the Kokiri Forest...
Link's playing attracts the attention of a young horse nearby. She starts following Link, who is a bit surprised. He walks along with the horse following him for a while.
Link: Hey, you.... you like this Ocarina?
The horse neighs, and Link decides to try riding her. He jumps on her back, and they race off.
Link: Wow, this is fast! Cool! Let's go to Death Mountain like this!!
Malon runs along, with Link and Epona just visible in the distant, distant background.
Malon: Epona.... Epona! She's always running away... I wonder where she went this time?
A picture of Death Mountain is followed by a scene of Link riding Epona along Death Mountain Trail. A big "rock" tumbles towards them, and Epona dodges out of the way.
Link: Look out!
Link stops and leans on another "rock."
Link: Can people really live here?!
The "rock" Link is leaning on sits up.
Link: Aaah!
Goron: You're strange. Are you a visitor?
The Goron shakes a finger at Link,
Goron: This is where we, the Gorons, live. It's dangerous for kids to come here.
Link stands up, a little offended.
Link: Take me to your leader, Darunia! I need to get the Spiritual Stone of Fire, and...
Another "rock" knocks Link flat. The Goron is rather unimpressed.
Darunia sits on a rug... it looks like the one that's outside his throne room thing in the game.
Darunia: Whaat? The Spiritual Stone of Fire? Hrmm. That is the stone that keeps our spirit inside it. Can I simply hand it over to this little brat?!
Link: So, it's okay to just let Ganondorf rule Hyrule?!
Darunia: QUIET!!
He emphasises this word by slamming his fist into a nearby wall. Link looks quite worried, to say the least!
Darunia puts a handful of rock into his mouth, and then spits it out again.
Darunia: guh... disgusting!
He turns to Link, and points at a group of Gorons.
Darunia: We are a race of rock eaters. But, ever since the ancient dragon in Dodongo's Cavern grew wild and restless, we haven't been able to go and get the rocks which are our favourite dish. So, unfortunately, I don't have time for you.
Darunia stands up.
Darunia: If, Link, as you said, you really want the Spiritual Stone, then defeat the ancient dragon, King Dodongo, and become a man!
Link turns around to see a mother Goron and her crying baby.
Baby Goron: Mum, I'm huuuungry... when's dinner?!
Link's Goron friend (the first one he met) turns to him.
Goron: If this continues, that child will die of hunger...
Link: Alright then. Guide me to this cave!
The Goron looks shocked.
Goron: Uh, me?!
He curls up into a rock/ball.
Goron: I don't wanna! It's scary!!
Link has a somewhat exasperated expression.
Link: Well, if this continues, then that child will die of hunger...
The Goron, Link, and Epona approach the entrance to Dodongo's Cavern, and look inside. the Goron hangs back a bit.
Goron: Are you really going? 5 of my friends who couldn't bear their hunger went to get rocks, and were eaten...
Link doesn't look too happy about that, but bravely walks into the cave anyway. Carrying a burning Deku stick, the three of them walk through the cave... Link looking determined, Epona looking a bit worried, and the Goron looking kinda petrified and shaking. They come across some Bomb Flowers.
Link: What's this?
Goron: They're the Dodongo's Cavern special product, Bomb Flowers.
Link picks one up to take a closer look.
Link: Flowers, huh?
Of course, it explodes, leaving a somewhat charred and unhappy looking Link
Goron: If you pick them, they explode.
Link: Now you tell me.
They're startled by huge echoing sounds.
Goron: Th... those are footsteps!!
The Goron starts to run off in a panic.
Goron: Aaaaah! I'm going back!
Link: Look out!!
Link grabe him and pulls him back. A huge mouth filled with very, very big, sharp teeth appears around the corner the Goron was running towards.
Link: It - it's HUGE!
Link gets back on Epona, and the three of them dodge a huge blast of fiery breath.
Goron: RUN!!
Link: I couldn't even knock his teeth out with my sword or slingshot!
As they run away, Link looks back.
Link: Hey, take a look at that... he's not very fast.
King Dodongo rolls into a ball and starts rolling after Link and Epona. (the Goron didn't waste any time getting out of there, and is long gone.)
Link: It's too fast!!
Epona lies down on the ground and covers her eyes. Link frantically tries to get her to move.
Link: Hey, don't lie down here!!
Kind Dodongo rolls past, missing Link and Epona.
Link (thinking): I get it... that thing might be really big, but it's not very clever...
Link sprints down a side passage.
Link: Hey, watch me!!
He dives for a bomb flower, scooping it up and turning to face King Dodongo. Link jumps into the air, right above King Dodongo's huge mouth.
Link: Hey... why don't you try eating THIS!!
He throws the Bomb Flower into King Dodongo's mouth. He snaps his mouth shut with a confused expression, and then a huge explosion blows up his stomach. Link punches the air triumphantly.
Link: I did it!
Back in the Goron Village, the Gorons are stuffing their faces.
Baby Goron: Mum, this is delicious!!
Darunia and Link stand off to the side.
Darunia: The truth is, that Ganondorf guy came here before.
Link is surprised to hear this.
Darunia: He wanted us to be his subordinates, and told me to hand over the Spiritual Stone. When I refused, he brutally let loose that dragon.
Darunia looks at Link proudly.
On the other hand, you did us a favour.
Darunia holds up his hand, and the air above it begins to sparkle.
Darunia: You really are a man among men! Now, accept this, as our gratitude to you, and as a mark of our friendship!
There is a scene of Link receiving the Goron Ruby.
The Spiritual Stone of Fire... The Goron Ruby!
Darunia picks up Link and puts him on his shoulder.
Darunia: From today, you are our brother! Hey, everyone! Tonight, we're having a banquet! Let's Dance!
Link's Goron friend leans towards him and whispers...
Goron: Now you'll see Darunia's favourite pastime, dancing.
The Gorons all sit in a circle while Link and Darunia dance in the torchlight, Link playing his Ocarina. Link stops playing for a second.
Link: Huh? That little horse isn't here... Heeey!
At Lon Lon Ranch, Epona trots up to Malon.
Malon: Epona? I wonder where you've been.
