Having seen a full discography for this Dallas, Texas-based outfit I was stunned to learn they'd been recording since the late 1950s. This late 1960s 45 (their second release for Bell Records) found them working with Chips Moman and his American Studio Group. The 'A' side's interesting in that it doesn't start like your typical soul vocal arrangement. The first time I played the track the pretty acoustic guitar lead-in made me wonder if I'd slapped on some folk-rock group. 'Course when lead singer Lee W. Jones Jr. kicked in ... Wow, great tune. The group-penned flip side is a more conventional soul arrangement. Not as immediately attention grabbing, but Jones' agonized vocal and the angelic backing vocals make the tune.
