Soundtrack "Heavy Metal" - Full Moon / Asylum 90004

Truth be told I bought this single for the Donald Fagen track.  I've never seen the movie, never listened to the parent album, and hadn't listed to the flip Don Felder side until I wrote this little blurb.  So what's Fagen's contribution to the soundtrack like?  Well, it may have been his first post-Dan breakup release, but it sure sounds like a Steely Dan product.  Showcasing a classic jazz-rock sound with a killer guitar solo from Steve Kahn the song would have easily fit on 'Gaucho' or even 'Aja'.  Only complaint; Fagen doesn't start his vocal until two thirds of the song are over.  As for the flip side, well to give credit where deserved, it's actually pretty good.  As the band's lead guitarist Felder always played in the shadow of Don Henley and Glen Frey, but he was the band's rock influence.  Dark and disturbed, the track's far better than what you'd expect from the forgotten Eagle.
