I still look at this one and scratch my head trying to figure out why I included it. Not particularly innovative and not really something you'd consider putting up on your walls (okay, maybe if you lived in a trailer). On the other hand, being born in Southern Alabama, maybe that was part of the appeal. |

The inclusion of this one may have something to do with the fact I'm a dad ... It also seems to have spurred the development of a branch of greeting cards and inspirational materials that showcase cute young babies in flowerpots. Hum, kind of nauseating now that I think about it. |

There aren't a lot of cheesecake covers on my website, but here's an exception - no I'm not including this one for the photo of Lindsey Buckingham ... My college roommate owned this LP. I'd never heard to them (interestingly I already knew who Fleetwood Mac was), but it didn't really matter. Stevi (no 'e' at the time) was simply a knockdown stunner ... In no way is the selection of this cover intended as an endorsement of a particular substance or lifestyle, rather it was selected in large part based on the marketing concept. You have to admit that it's kind of a surprise there weren't dozens of bands with the same name and the same cover. That said, the subject matter probably didn't help sales. Hard to imagine your local Sears or Kemp Mill record store putting this baby in their front display ...

There's not a lot of cheesecake on the list; not that I don't enjoy the genre, rather it's already been documented far beyond anything I could do. That said, here's one of the isolated exceptions. Living in Northern Virginia I'm a big fan of Washington, D.C. soul which means I'm a fan of The Dynamic Superiors. Led by Tony (Toni) Washington, they were one of the area's premier mid-1970s soul groups, though they never enjoyed a great deal of commercial success. Part of the reason may have had to do with Washington's rather blatant gay lifestyle. How many mid-1970s albums can you think of where the lead singer poses in eye shadow and rouge? Anyhow, kudos to Motown for having the moxy to actually release the album with such a risqué cover. |

For some reason I'm attracted to lowtech and this late-1970s obscurity is a classic cover. Patrick Lunborg (the Lama) actually did an interview with namesake James back in 2005 and he talked a little bit about the cover photo: "My father [Dick Golen] was a newspaper and then an advertising photographer and he took all the shots (a 10 hr session, he was such a perfectionist!). It took 7 overlays for the front and 3 for the back.
