Produced by Paul
Leka, 1975's "Second Step"
is a real curiosity to my ears. If this is any indication of what they
debut sounds like, then what was all the excitement about? Largey
written by Fowler, material like 'It's Going On Saturday, 'Faster Gun' and
'Humpty Dumpty' leaves me with the impression of pleasant, but subpar Simon
and Garfunkel. Rex Fowler and Neal Shulman can sing, but to my ears
their harmonies aren't particularly attractive. They just don't seem
to blend their voices very well. As for their folk-rock styling; well
much of the material is pretty and their wordplay is clever and occasionally
even interesting, but there isn't a single song here that you haven't
already heard somewhere else. One of the few two star ratings I've
given ... 1.) It's Going On Saturday (Rex Fowler) - 3:25 2.) Our Lives (Rex Fowler) - 3:30 3.) I'm In Love Again (Rex Fowler) - 3:20 4.) Faster Gun (Rex Fowler) - 3:50 5.) Humpty Dumpty (Rex Fowler) - 3:30
(side
2) 2.) Cosmos Lady (Rex Fowler) - 3:05 3.) Walking On Air (Neal Shulman) - 2:27 4.) Lullabye On New York (Rex Fowler) - 5:07 5. Hey, Little Mama (Rex Fowler) - 2:45
Fowler and Shulman are apparently still performing and have a nice website at:
