The following year the duo regrouped, releasing the Gary Usher produced "Of Cabbages and Kings". Obviously drawing inspiration from The Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper" (who wasn't?), the collection found the duo taking a stab at making a serious musical statement. Overlooking the dumbsh*t psychedelic cover art and the equally goofy narratives and sound effects, the set wasn't nearly as bad as you'd envision. In musical terms, "Rest In Peace" (complete with raga interlude), "The Gentle Cold of Dawn", "Family Way" and "I'll Get Around To It When and If I Can" weren't all that bad. Elsewhere, while occasionally ponderous, the heavily orchestrated, sidelong "Progress Suite" was certainly daring - featuring five interlocking movements, complete with Indian instrumentation ("Prologue"), not even the Beatles' had dared link songs together in a continuous suite. Greeted with rave critical reviews, commercially the set proved a disappointment peaking at #186.

1968's "The Ark" was an equally ambitious effort to update their sound. Unfortunately, songs such as "Painted Day Smile", "You Need Feet" and "Panthesitic Study for Guitar and Large Bird" just didn't cut it.

"The Ark" track listing:

(side 1)
1.) The Emancipation of Mister X

2.) Sunstroke

3.) The Ark

4.) The Raven

5.) Imagination

6.) Painted Dayglow Smile

(side 2)

1.) Pipe Dream

2.) Transatlantic Trauma

3.) Sidewalk Requiem Los Angeles June 5th and 6th

4.) Pantheistic Study for Guitar and Large Bird

5.) Paxton Quigley's Had the Course

6.) You Need Feet

Their partnership lasted long enough to complete work on a soundtrack for the quickly forgotten film "Three In the Attic". By late 1969 they were permanently history. Stuart subsequently moved to the States where he focused on writing music. Clyde focused on acting, appearing in a steam of stage productions and television. Throughout the '70s the '80s the two kept in touch occasionally regrouping to play oldies tours.
