The following year the duo regrouped, releasing
the Gary Usher produced "Of Cabbages and
Kings". Obviously drawing inspiration from The Beatles'
"Sgt. Pepper" (who wasn't?), the collection found the duo taking a
stab at making a serious musical statement. Overlooking the dumbsh*t
psychedelic cover art and the equally goofy narratives and sound effects,
the set wasn't nearly as bad as you'd envision. In musical terms, "Rest
In Peace" (complete with raga interlude), "The Gentle Cold of
Dawn", "Family Way" and "I'll Get Around To It When and
If I Can" weren't all that bad. Elsewhere, while occasionally
ponderous, the heavily orchestrated, sidelong "Progress Suite" was
certainly daring - featuring five interlocking movements, complete with
Indian instrumentation ("Prologue"), not even the Beatles' had
dared link songs together in a continuous suite. Greeted with rave critical
reviews, commercially the set proved a disappointment peaking at #186.

1968's "The
Ark" was an equally ambitious effort to update their
sound. Unfortunately, songs such as "Painted Day Smile", "You
Need Feet" and "Panthesitic Study for Guitar and Large Bird"
just didn't cut it. (side
