While we're opposed to boots, we'll admit to owning
a couple of CSN&Y artifacts. A live set released by the Canyon label,
"Wooden Nickel" was actually a reissue of an earlier boot "Bluebird Live" released by DittoLino Discs. To our ears
most of the performances were actually far stronger than the "Four Way Street" set. On material such as "Guinevere", "You Don't Have To Cry" and "Suite To Judy Blue Eyes" (note the creative new name) the group's harmonies matched their studio performances.
That wasn't true for Young's two selections, but you wouldn't expect him to
have perfect pitch. Elsewhere, Crosby's "Birds", "Listen Once Again To My Bluebird" and "Sea of Madness" were all selections not available on earlier legitimate studio/live sets. As far as sound quality goes, overlooking the abrupt between song transitions (fade? never heard of the term ...), the collection was pretty good, sounding like it was nabbed off a soundboard. (side

Their first studio in 14 years brought with it a
wave of public anticipation and from a lesser group sheer dread
... Well, the good news is that after all these years 1988's
"American Dream" showed
that the four of 'em were still occasionally capable of hitting those
gorgeous harmonies. Anyone doubting that comment need only listen to
Young's "This Old House". Not to be overly critical, but co-produced
by Niko Bolas and CSN&Y, much of the album sounded like a patchwork of
solo efforts half-heartedly cobbled together. It certainly left the
impression they still couldn't collaborate on a decent song to save their
collective lives. Perhaps not a surprise, Young equated himself the
best, with the title track and "Feel Your Love" providing two of
the better numbers. At the other end of the spectrum, Stills was
conspicuously absent from the proceedings. His strongest contribution
"That Girl" was also the set's most commercial offering.
Simply due to the fact it was a reflection on his "years in the
wild", Crosby's "Compass" may have been the most interesting
song.
