More than happy to satisfy consumer demand for Mersybeat product, Epic rushed the band back into the recording studio, hastily releasing 1964's
"American Tour". In spite of the title and the cover art, the LP wasn't a live concert set. Their third studio release in less than a year, the LP offered up a surprisingly impressive set of studio originals. Giving credit where due, the band was to be commended for turning in a first-rate set of Mersybeat
pop and for doing so faced with little or no time to actually come up with
new material.. "Whenever You're Around", "I Want You Still" and "Because" (the latter a top-10 hit) found the band effortlessly churning out quality top-40 pop. Elsewhere, the R&B instrumentals "Move On", "Blue Monday" and
"Ol' Sol'" demonstrated they could handle harder rocking material. Sure, Clark and company weren't exactly
stretching the boundaries of popular music, but the album was never less than
thoroughly professional and enjoyable. All told, it's probably one of our
favorite early-'60s offerings - certainly one of the DC5's most consistent
efforts. On the other hand, compared to earlier releases, it proved a mild sales disappointment, peaking at #11. "American Tour" track listing: 1.) Because (Dave Clark) - 2.)
